The date of 1887 was painted when the new roof was put on, so I suspect that the owner knows something that we don't.
(Probably that it was built in 1887 for Langdons.)
I'm researching the history at the moment.

Joseph Sharples has emailed me to say this building was built about 1858 for Abbott's who were cabinet makers.
It was designed by Henry Sumners who was responsible for a number of churches and the Southern Hospital.

My research has found that the date of 1887 refers to when the building was taken over by Langdon's.
The Scandinavian Hotel was in Duke Street - behind this building - and was demolished in the early 1930s to make way for an extension to Langdons.

I saw workmen chucking stuff out of an upstairs window of the Shanghai Palace only this morning...must be clearing it out.

I would keep well away from the shanghi, its supposed to be full of asbestos! thats why there clearing the other side first, if you look at the canal thread on here.
