    Default Skelhorne Street.

This was taken on 18th July 1966 during that crazy summer of World Cup football and World Cup Willie.

The Mirror news board reads 'Last Nights big games: Full reports', however, there were no games on 17th so the poster must be at least a day old.

There were games on 16th including England beating Mexico 2-0 with goal in either half from Manchester United's Bobby Charlton and Liverpool's Roger Hunt, staged at Wembley Stadium in front of 92,000. This win found them leading their group from Uruguay, Mexico and France after their 3 games.

On the same day West Germany fought a 0-0 draw with Argentina at Villa Park in front of 51,000 leaving the group standings as W.Germany, Argentina, Spain and Switzerland.

Also playing that night was Portugal who beat Bulgaria 3-0 at Old Trafford in front of just 26,000 fans, Eusabio getting on the scoresheet as he was to do regularly during the tournament.

The last group finished with the Soviet Union topping it from N. Korea, Italy and Chile, with the Soviets having beaten Italy 1-0 with a goal from Chislenko at Roker Park in front of nearly 28,000.

By 1985 I, myself was to have been to all of these grounds following Everton.

Also in the picture, the Taxi premises were to become Las Vegas amusement arcade within a few years, providing pleasure to a number of the Gerard Gardens kids I could name and of course the well loved Ribble Bus Station can also be seen.

World cup Willie. Our only mascot to have come up trumps.

Thanks Gerard. I don't think I'll remember it as although voluntarily dragged around town on a Saturday by my dad as I for some reason loved the household goods sections in the basements of Blacklers and TJ's and the like, he was always buying gadgets that like now you'd say 'Why???' I never took much notice of the clothes shops names. I know Harold Ian was later on the next block along towards the big house. See how long it takes the rest to come up with it. I'm sure you've mentioned getting your Ben Shermans from there in the past.

on my £8.28 I got as chain lad on the Mount Pleasant car park I done well..

A lad named Frank who I knew worked there..
that might have something to do with me being dead smart going out them days...!

The shop I mention was the 1st place you could buy Bennies in the town..
some might say different...I'm talking about the real American style Bennies.
boss unusal cheque styles.. not the plain gingham you can get today..
and it was the 1st shop to sell American style 'Boxies"

    Blacklers basement..?...I loved that place..
just like a giant 50p shop...rubbish... only dearer..

Ha ha yeah, that's how I remember it.

Until the Grotto came to town - oops no, still the same, only it was Father Christmas giving it you instead.

Yeah, probably that's the one. I'm sure the name was Harry Fenton. I'm talking early and mid 1970s.

I can't recall the one on Commutation Row.
There did used to be an Indian restaurant there at one time (1960s) called The Kohi Nor. ( it might have been next door to a pub).

I just asked my husband - he said yeah Harry Fenton's was opposite Lewis's (he used to work in Lewis's at that time)

What about the mens boutique in Lewis's - it was called 'The Buttonhole'.

.. appologies for hijacking this thread, sorry Ged!

I always enjoy reminiscing about some of the old shops and the fashion styles of the 60's and 70's.

    Sorry Ged lad...

The Buttonhole ?...now thats got me..
Lewis's was great as well back in the 70's for clothes.. nice stuff..
then it went crap selling Johns Market type rubbish.. the whole shop went downhill..

Got hundreds of pics Lind all over Lewis's before it closed.. all around that mens clothing department.
I was wandering around the 5th floor area, where the ladies Glemby hairdressers was..
I noticed this little room hidden away....up some stairs down a little corridor, I think..
Unused for years, the area outside all dusty..nobody been there for years..
I went in this little room and it was amazing... a gents toilet..
Spotless.... mirrors all over the wall.. fancy dimly lit little wall lampshades..
Window view looking out over Dickie Lewis toward The Adelphi..

All lit up.. very dim, as if still in use.. absolutely spotless.
and it hadn't been been used in over 10 years..or how ever long that 5th floor area had been closed..

It was like going back in time... it really was...
