The old photo is taken from the fantastic flickr photostream by jibup - see here.

Although not from an elevated position like his, this shot from yesterday shows the public realm area near to the students guild building off Brownlow Hill as it is today. 'Public Realm' - I remember when areas like this were just referred to as 'Pedestrianised'. What lies beneath many areas where we walk - who knows.

Thanks everyone, glad you're all liking them.

Another 40 files out of the LRO on Saturday morning to copy 226 images and amazed at how many have not been requested to be viewed before - so some first timers will be coming up soon including this one of Tarleton Street taken on 27th May 1968.

Here is a simliar view - minus the Free Church Centre, what looked like a fine building with a tower, now replaced by a modern style bland building.

This one belonging to the Liverpool Echo has been seen before, but as a supplier to all things essential to a young me back in the early 70s, I make no apologies for posting it again. I was actually hoping to see another shot of it at the LRO but alas, you can only see the vertical sign in the distance.

Banastre Street and Tarleton Street both own the dishonour of being named after the same chap, a Liverpool slave trader Banastre Tarleton no less.

Hobbies was a fantastic shop! Wasn't it somewhere near the Caernarvon Castle pub?

Great photo in 1968. I think those three visible cars are an Escort, Cortina Mk I (in front of it) and a Hillman Hunter.

    Great photos Ged

Thanks Ged. I was only talking to a mate the other day about Jack Sharps. He asked me what happened to it. I think it closed about 91/92? (I'm probably wrong!). We also got talking about Philip Son & Nephew. He said that it was about where Black's now stands. I thought it was where the Welkin is!

Remember Ricky Brown(e)s as well on Sir Thomas Street?
