Default Naming of boats and ships..

My GGrandad had three fishing cobles.

One was named the Kate and Violet i believe it is in Sunderland now.

I once saw a little boat in Whitby named The Black Pig.

I often wonder how do these boats and ships get their names ..

    Hi Caterina

Very often the whim of the owner, much like the naming of race horses, or after previous boats or family members, etc. There was a series of ships owned by the Leyland company that had the names of Liverpool districts, Aigburth, Wavertree, etc. [

FT Everard has a fleet of tankers with names ending in "ity" >>>

Alacrity, Allurity, Arduity and Annuity to name four. It is said that the wife of Fred Everard names them and the only name she will not use is "Virginity"
I think that may be an old seafares tale.

There is consistency in the naming of ocean liners.
The White Star Line ships always ended in 'ic', Titanic, etc.
Another line ended all its ships names in 'ia', Mauretania, etc.
The Cunard Line have used English Queen's names since the 1930s.

It was Cunard also who named her Ocean liners in IA, as in Mauretania, Luisatania. My father-in-laws dad went down on the Lancastria at St. Nazaire (one of the wars biggest kept secrets at the time due to the massive loss of life) There are streets named in Walton such as Saxonia.
