1st May marks the 70th Anniversary of the 1941 May Blitz upon Liverpool, Bootle, Birkenhead, Wallasey and the surrounding areas.

Please spare a thought tomorrow for the many victims of this terrible event. They are our people, please remember them.

Lest we ever forget.

1st MAY 1941

The start of the May Blitz, 8 days of bombing intended to cripple the ports either side of the river Mersey and hamper the supply lines from the West. The area was hit hard during this period with terrible loss of life and destruction.

Just before 11.pm the first set of bombs fell onto Wallasey and signalled the start of the May Blitz. Liverpool and Bootle were also targeted this night as the Luftwaffe tried to destroy the docks and bomb the people into submission............ It failed.

Cazneau street and Low Hill are hit, Garmoyle Road and Wellington Road see houses demolished. The glass roof of Lime Street Railway station is damaged, and Crawford's biscuit factory is hit causing a fire. Bad weather forces the Luftwaffe to return to its base. Nobody could have known just what the next few days would bring when the enemy came back.
