Hi all. I have a few of my ancestors addresses which I can't find on any map. I'd like tofind photos and discover what the living conditions were like at the time they lived there and was wondering if anyone could advise me where to look for maps and info please? The addresses are: Woodruff Sreet c1866; Bevin Lane, Toxteth Park c1875; Bembridge Street c1881 and Hyslop Street c1895. Also, in 1901 my grandparents were living in "5 in 3 Court, Laxey Street." Can someone explain this "5 in 3" address please and where Laxey Street was? I presume it was quite a poor area as I believe the courts were very deprived areas? Many thanks, Trish

For living conditions in the courts, please check out the pre war page of my site mentioned below.

Wow! That was fast! Thanks Ged. I wasn't sure if it was a house or part of a house (No 5 in No 3). Have you any idea where I might find a map with it on? Regards, Trish

Bit of a map from 1906 Trish, it has Bembridge, Hyslop, Laxey and Woodruff Streets on it. Sorry the quality isn't brilliant, but it may give you some idea.

That pub was the "Arley Inn" (No. 172/4
(There is also mentioned at 170 Vauxhall Road the "Fail-me-never" Public House.
Even I don't recall that one!

On t'other side of the "Glass House" was the "Black Dog"

Hello ellergreen. I've never heard the name mentioned. Do you remember it or did you find out from a book because there was a pub at the bottom of Arley st, demolished for the Kingsway tunnel.

    Hi Ged
Here's a page from my 1923 copy of Kelly's street Dirctory which shows most of Vauxhall Road.
    incl Arley Inn etc.
If I can add to it please let me know.
My Dad used to drink in the Glass House and the Black Dog when I was a lad!!

Hiya Ellergreen. As I suspect, the Arley inn was on one corner of Arley st and the Fail me never on the other corner as Freddie O'Connors book states. However, the pub we are after would be on the corner of Eldon st directly opposite the Glasshouse, shown on your listings as No.192 Michael Finn, a fried fish dealer?

My mistake, my Kellys Directory is for 1938!
I forgot to mention, isn't "The Eagle" still open? I can't remember if that was Fail-me-never renamed or additional to the ones I mentioned.
btw the demolished pub at t'other end of Arley street, I believe, was the Non-Pariel.

Yes the Eagle is still open, was in there last week. The Eagle is on the corner of Blackstock st, the Fail me never was demolished for the Tunnel. The Non Pareil still stands on Marshalls Place but is derelict.

The Jamaica building is still there. Known locally at the Rat, the building is now empty. The Castle is still going as is the Green Man and the Eagle. The feathers was demol;ished as was the Queens just a few years ago .The Marble Hall is now a cafe and the Athol Vaults is derelict.
