Default Can you recognise this church?

I thought I knew most of Liverpool’s churches but this photograph has puzzled me for some time. It is a well-built church (it looks as if it is faced with stone) in a prosperous area (possibly Aigburth?) but there are few other clues. The photograph was one of a set owned by an organ repairer/cleaner. [...]

    Hmm... I haven't a clue sorry.

I think that Aigburth could be a bit misleading. I've got a hunch that it's more likely to be somewhere like Newsham... somewhere north Liverpool. But I could very well be wrong.

Also, what is the unusually large pole on the right hand side of the image?

They were a fairly busy pair of Church Organ Builders...

There are two of their organs listed here along with the names of repairers...

Great that you're doing a new edition of the Liverpool's Churches book Colin. Have you ever come across a decent view of St. Joseph's in Grosvenor Street. I know a few in the distance or at an angle exists, even interiors - but not a good view like that pic you've just posted. The LRO have a cracking selection of previously unpublished church pics you know.

There's also a book that may contain some clues?

    Author: Lawrence Elvin

I agree that the image doesn't look much like Aigburth. Good luck in your quest to identify the church, Colin.

How about All Saints, Bentley Road.

If you check the Alan Godfrey map of Princes Park, you can see that the church is on a bend in the road. There is some text on the bottom of the pic - I can see All and possibly Bentley - what do you think ?

All Saints, Bentley Road was demolished in 1974. There's housing there now.

Thanks Chris. I pass Bentley Road all the time, but don't recall ever going down it. Shame the church is gone - there's so many in Liverpool that are no longer being used and I fear for their future.
