Default UNSEEN AND UNPUBLISHED - THE COACH & HORSES - 11TH JUNE 1955

Another LRO gem. Formerly a coaching house and site of a turnpike for the old stage coaches travelling out of Liverpool during the 19th Century, it was named the Low Hill Coffee House pre- 1880s and was a noted political house in the 1840s. At that time, land West of Hall Lane was used as a crciket ground whose team used the pub as their headquarters. East of Hall Lane was land used as a military parade ground until the 1880s when terraced property was built on it. In 1950 the Coach & Horses was managed by Randall McDonald and was in use as a pub into the 1980s until it was vacated and there was a change in usage. Currently a communication firm take residence in the property.

The building demolished on the corner had originally been a beer house at No. 2 Low Hill whose manager in 1905 was William Hall. Adjoining it at No.4 was a dairyman and cow keepers premises owned by William Disley. The beer house ceased trading in the 1920s and in the 1950 No.2 was a fish shop. The Autolux taxi sign advertises a business located lower down on Kensington. The other businesses seen here in Kenny which are now replaced by 3 high council flats built in the late 1950s were: Miss Annie Tweedale, Newsagent. Samuel Black, Secondhand boot dealer. Albert Hancox, Tobacconist and Autolux Taxi Services.

Don't understand why you say these pics are unseen. I saw them a few years ago.

Read the title, you aint seen the one dated 11th June 1955 before old bean. The first one is in Freddy O'Connors book (as credited) purely for comparison.

ps, the 2nd one you have titled as Low Hill is in fact Kensington

Your original post concentrates on the first picture, with the 2nd pic thrown in for good measure. You credit Freddy O'Connor for additonal information - did he supply some/all of the text and/or the photograph ? Your post is unclear on this issue.

All of my pics are from Liverpool Record Office, stored in a folder titled Low Hill, hence the pics are called low-hill1, 2, 3 etc.

pic1 shows Hughes confectionery at no.7 and Lloyd, radio dealer at no.9, both on Kensington (thank you Ged).
pic2 is of Low Hill. I'll add some more info when I find my notes from 2008, which could take a long time.

My post Alansimp concentrates, as the title says on the photo dated 11th June 1955, hence the title of the thread in black bold type, I should know since I started it. I could easily have left out the first pic (dated 1950 which isn't in the black bold type) but used it show what was there on that corner in the pic I posted. Is the title of my threads bothering you or something? If so, you might want to just ignore them. All of the photos clearly titled on this thread have been unpublished in book form or on forums or websites before, which i'm sure you've now right clicked into your computer which is what i'm all about, sharing unseen photos which is why I take the time and effort to get them from the archives.

I got these pics in particular when on another thread regarding pubs, it was mentioned if I had any pics of the Coach and Horses as a pub, which I do, on my site, but this one is in addition to that.

Great pics of the Coach and Horses.

I went there a few times and funny enough every time I did I ended up talking with Mark McGann the actor.

My dad was born there back in 1908 so I was really pleased to see the picture also found one which shows the pub as it is now, the communications centre. Only just started doing the family history bit so the picture is a great find, thanks for posting
