Derek Guyler, born at the outbreak of WW1 in 1914, 'over the water' in Wallasey. He was the only child of Elsie and Samuel Guyler. He grew up in Liverpool and attended Liverpool College. On leaving school he tried his hand at a few things including working with his father in the family jewellers business 'Green & Guyler'. He eventually joined the Liverpool Repertory Company in 1935 which became his training ground for a very successful career in theatre, radio and television.

He's probably best known as the cantankerous school janitor 'Norman Potter' in the TV series "Please Sir!"

Derek died 7 Oct 1999 in Brisbane, Australia from natural causes.
