Brilliant that isn't it Gerard. We used to play a sort of spot game whereby you kicked the ball up the slope and when it was your turn you couldn't let the ball come off it or it was one against you, up to 3 or 5 or whatever and as you say, shooties in the subway tubes themselves. For those that don't know, the famous Johnny Gianelli's chippy was just at the top of those steps, well the rear of it anyway and then it was demolished and the TGWU building built there.

Use this pic Ged.. if you haven't got it that is..

We did that as well...kicking up that hill and all that...
What about the graveyard behind Giannellis..
right on the site of where this subway was.. maybe a little to the right..

Playing on the old grave stones... remember it like yesterday...
you would have been too young I think to play in there but you probably
    will remember it vaguely maybe.

I remember it all getting ripped up.. right where that subway is..sorry..was..!!

All the old earthenware and white clay pipes.. smoking pipes.. little things..
I remember watching the Irish lads digging and removing graves...
You know, as kids.. harrishing them all day...'Hey Mr..whats that for....."
one of them found some old coins... I remember that well..

    Thanks Gerard.

Here's a pic in 1958 of what was the graveyard to Christ Church which had long since gone. You can see the walls and railings and gateposts of the entrance to us just behind Gianelli's yard.

I know of course you will have seen this before, it looks like some of the graves are still in situ in 1966.

and I've just asked Kate and Kate did as well.. deffo wrong Ged..I can guarantee that..
Not your fault... probably wrong info on the back of the photo..

    The 2nd photo...

what was to the left just out of view ?.. 3 of them..

Ah so it's not 1958 then, yes that was the info given. I'm trying to remember when it was cleared for the subway, I assume in time for around the time of the building/opening of the flyovers - approx 70ish?

One of the gravestones Ged was very long...shaped like a Toblerone.
Triangular.... it sticks out in my mind....a lot of people will remember that...and it was around 1965 or later..

It was what the kids always played on.... and I was about 8 or 10.. I was born in 1957.

I wonder where they reburied those people and what happened to the headstones.

Feel free to use any of these on your site or on the GG facebook site. (LRO City engineers photographs) It's no use us both having to sift through the same LRO folders when we can be getting other ones out.

Oops - I didn't see that question you asked earlier. No, I wouldn't know. I don't think I was let out until about 1970

There were 3 garages there Ged..something else I remember well...
Not from when I lived there on the right of the pic on the top landing as you know...(25d)

But from years before in 25c.. underneath where I later lived..
My Nins...25c.. where my Mam grew up.. and her sister Kathleen was born..
the 1st child born in Gerard Gardens.. in 25c..

I remember as a kid looking out the windows of 25c at them 3 garages...
all different sizes... a big one..medium one.. and a littlle one..
they always baffled me as to why they were different sizes.....I never found out.

too near maybe to be involved with all the Hymans shops...

they were just on the opposite side of Hunty opposite the arch from the gardens..
I have not got a clue who used them.. but I never saw them open or being used..

    Edited..
I must of saw them being used...
    they were definately garages...
