George you could try FreeBMD, Ancestry census (payable), The Latter Day Saints (1881 census free). They were the main sites were I found most of the information I needed and I did very well getting back to the 1750s for two surnames.

Good luck, I am sure you will find it very enjoyable!

For the past two years I have been doing my family history and have to say that the best site was Ancestory.com. I guess in your case it would be Ancestory.uk. This site has provided me with numerous census, wills, passenger lists, obits, newspaper articles etc. It is really amazing what you can find on this site. You can also connect with everyone else on the site and look at the pictures of ancestors that they have posted. They do searches for you and almost everyday I received an email saying they have found a possible match with some document. Most times it matched to my ancestors and sometimes it didnt. Yes, you do have to pay a fee each month but it is so worth the cost.

Ancestry is the best subscription site for Liverpool researchers because of its Liverpool collection available to Worldwide and Premium subscribers:-

If anyone is considering subscribing to any sites look out for any discounts that might be available. I got a nice discount through a National Trust promotion for my subscription.

Another way to do it is to buy Family Tree Maker 2012 Platinum from Amazon as it includes a 6 Month ‘PREMIUM’ Membership to Ancestry.co.uk. The savings more than make up the cost of buying Family Tree Maker.

This was true quite some time ago so you would need to check the current prices and deals first to see if it still applies.
