A friend - Valerie Cope - used to get free tickets for Silver Blades and a group of us would go, on a Monday night, I think. I fell over so many times I was in danger of getting what Barry McGuigan called 'a cauliflower bum'.

Yes, I went to Silver Blades and like you Kevin, I kept falling over, in other words I was hopeless!

From our second visit I'd just sit in the bar and watch!

Ged - give yerself a slap for your cheek. It'll be less painfull than me doing it.

Kevin, I never went to the bar, I was too young!

I think my grandad had a job there, smoothing the ice over with a machine.

Hi Kev I worked at the Ice rink from 69 to 71 as a member of the Ice Gang, I was still at school but we were issued with a free pass and our job was to clean and resurface the ice after each session. This would entail a gang of about 12 lads 6 of which would walk the ice with big brushes gathering all the slush and water, there would be 3 or 4 lads with big scraper/squeegy things and all the slush would be pushed down a big sluice and then a landrover with chains on its wheels would pull a plough around which was like a proper plough but with a blade like a wood plane on it. this would take a layer off the ice leaving it as smooth as a baby's bum. I finally ended up being the ploughman after many months of being on the scraper. this of course was the days before the Zambonie arrived and made us all redundant which must have been 1971.There were three old blokes that drove the Landrover but I only remember two of their names. One was Jack and the othe was Eugene (known as Youie ).I spent every waking hour I could in the place until we had to relinquish our passes and start paying which meant a visit maybe once or twice a week. :-(
