    Default Edge Hill Station

Won these A4 Photo's off E-bay about 2 years ago - £10 the lot! Appeared to be someone's project but I got a cracking deal.

    What a sweet little bird.
If it's waiting for a train to stop at Edge Hill, it'll be waiting for a long time.

The Edge Hill cutting is rectangular in shape, bounded on three sides by the vertical walls of the cutting, and at the east by the Chatsworth Street overbridge. North of Chatsworth Street the tracks continue, still in a cutting, to join the main line north of Edge Hill Station.

At the western end three tunnels enter the west wall of the cutting. The northernmost (the 'Stephenson' tunnel) to Crown Street and the central one to Wapping date from the opening of the line while the southernmost tunnel was driven through an original storage recess in about 1846 and was further opened up when the south cutting wall was cut back by three metres after 1864 to accommodate an extra track. Of the three tunnels the Stephenson tunnel is the smallest, being 5.15 metres high to the crown of the arch, and 4.60 metres wide. At the far end, which is now blocked, there is a date stone of 1829 set into the roof. There is also a hole in the floor dropping down into the roof of the Wapping Tunnel. The tunnel is cut through solid rock and unlined with brick arching; internally it is in good condition with a large quantity of long stalactites hanging from the roof.

No, it's not closed, but most trains don't stop.
Perhaps somebody else knows which trains stop at Edge Hill.

Trains do stop there all the time and its lucky that they do.

Edge Hill used to be a built up area but its gone really quiet over the past few decades. Every half an hour or so they stop, not much considering how many trains pass through there daily but lets just be thankful its still open.

It still has the original station buildings and other buildings which had some function, probably engine rooms etc..

Brilliant pics Jona, thanks for that.

God it was in a terrible state at one time wasn't it? It looked like a bomb had actually hit it.

in february this year there was a steam special out of lime street to london,

went down to edge hill to see it, awesome, weather was freezing

hauled by one of the powerful princess class locos that worked out of lime street on expresses from the 30s to the 60s

anyway theres a clip of it here blasting out of the tunnel into edge hill station

worth a watch the sound was amazing, could hear it half way up the cutting it was that loud, and all that steam everywhere

    Default Steam Tours

Sounds good Mike. You'll have to let us know the next time Steam Tours visit Liverpool. I missed the last one - I meant to pop into Lime Street to see the loco there.
