    Default Upper Dawson Street, c1963

I have a strong affection for this bookshop, even though it had disappeared long before I came to Liverpool. It represents a lost world of retailing – where bookshops would survive happily in a mix of other small shops. Today, the chains have squeezed the life out of these small independents, along with impossibly high [...]

Excellent sentiments, Colin. Little book shops need to provide more than just the latest books, especially since they could never compete on price with the big and online retailers.

Are there any independant book shops in the surrounding areas ?

Nice pic' Colin! Bookshops appear to be going the way of the dinosaur, but don't forget Henry Bohn's bookshop,in London rd,which if anything, seems to be thriving, though it's collector's, s/hand stuff, mainly,I think?

From Butter to Books, not much had changed since Herdman first painted it. Even the door locks are the very same.

    The comparison goes even further...

Butter was sold 8d by the lb, in the 1860's.
Books were sold 6d by the lb, in the 1960's.

    Howabout that?

I thought that looked familiar... I can't believe it's not better! Wasn't that where Weight Watchers started? ... Then the Readers Digest?... Yellow(ed) Pages?

Upper Dawson Street, and some related information when C.F. Inston took these photographs around Upper Dawson Street.

Colin, I hope you don't mind me using some low res. copies to illustrate the Blog?

In Liverpool Characters and Streets, 'The Butter Place' is featured in a few of the images. On page 69, there's a picture of the shop with a canvas awning dropped down. It has very faint, but legible writing on it, "Kelly's Butter Store". It looks like the store had taken over much of the block, certainly more than the bookstore in the later 1960's.
