Thread: Mary Jane Kelly (Wilson)

    Smile Mary Jane Kelly (Wilson)

Of all the family backgrounds you DON'T want to find... A "Ripper"
researcher has come across my mysterious family and put forward the
thought that my Mary Jane Kelly may have been the MJK who was the last
"canonical" victim. Now I am desperate to find that she died in her bed
    - in Liverpool! Does anyone have current access to parish registers so
that I can prove they are two different Marys? I suppose we could go for
    DNA testing...!!!

Mary Jane Kelly married Robert Wilson - St Nicholas, Liverpool on 9
    September 1872.

In the 1881 census we have:

Dwelling: Penrhyn St 7 Ct 19, Liverpool, Lancs

Robert Wilson, Head, age 27, a baker
    Mary Wilson, Wife, age 26
    Robert Wilson, son age 7
Christina Wilson, daur age 10 (weeks or months)
John Kelly, visitor, age 57 from Ireland.

My grandfather, Arthur John "Sullivan" (born either 5 Jul 1884 OR
September 1887 - but I can't find a birth anywhere!) claimed Robert and
Christina were his brother and sister, yet he had a different surname.
    He was orphaned.

The entire family has disappeared by the 1991 census.

    1871 English Census
8 Victoria St., Liverpool, near Stanley (now a printing shop, I believe)
    John Kelly 50, joiner
    Mary Kelly 50
Mary Jane Kelly 18, General Servant
    Margaret and Harriet Kaybeck, servants

    Any info would be appreciated...

Or though there is no documented evidence of the Rippers MJK it is believed that her place of origin was that of Limerick in Ireland so therefore if there's no firm evidence of origin your Ripperoligist could be just making assumptions.

She was 16 when she married....
1879, Kelly was reportedly married to a coal miner named Davies, who was killed two or three years later in a mine explosion.

This Mary Jane Kelly was married when she was 17 to a baker named Robert Wilson. He may have died around 1881 and she reportedly went on to have a child in London in the mid 1880s.

Robert Wilson born abt1853/4 in Liverpool, Lancashire. He was the son of James Wilson, shoemaker. He married Mary Kelly; at St Nicholas, Liverpool on 9 September 1872.

Ten to one says the Ripper MJK was from Liverpool too if she or her parents came in the 1850s. The coal miner story from Wales has been fairly debunked. Records don't substantiate it.

If this woman was aged 18 in 1871 that would have made her 35 in late 1888, probably too old to have been the Mary Jane Kelly who lived in Miller's Court, Spitalfields, who by all accounts was in her mid-twenties at the time of her murder on November 9, 1888.

P.S. I have taken the liberty of posting the above Census information and my reply at JtR Forums in the section on Mary Jane Kelly, in case other forum members wish to comment.

Here is this Liverpool Mary Kelly in the 1861 Census:

    1861 England Census

    5 Bostock St., Liverpool
Mary Jane Kelly age 7, born in Liverpool
    Father John 41
Mother Mary 42, born in Ireland
    Brother Henry 13
    Brother William 18
    Sister Ann Amelia 9

I'm sure the family researcher above will be happy to know her great grandmother wasn't killed by Jack the Ripper. Although I for one wouldn't mind being related to the real MJK.

I found the website with the account of this mysterious Liverpool Mary Jane Kelly.

She was dismissed based on the reports of seven Kelly brothers and living in Wales. I know enough not to rule her ancestor out based on those stories.

Edit: Ancestry has the names revised. They are Margaret and Daniel HAYBROOK, although, according to other census years and the BMD Index, their real name is probably ABROOK.

Margaret Haybrook 21, Head, married, no profession, L'pool
Daniel Haybrook 20 weeks, son, L'pool

Coincidentally, there is a Rachal (Rachel) Abrook, whom I've determined to be Margaret Abrook's (Haybrook) sister, living and working as a general servant at the public house at 347 Scotland Road (the Parrot Hotel) in 1881, 200 metres from the end of Penrhyn St. where Mary Jane Kelly was living.

I did put it to her that her ancestor might be the Ripper Mary Kelly but she told me she had already considered it and dismissed it based on the reports of seven Kelly brothers and living in Wales. I know enough not to rule her ancestor out based on those stories. If that's an assumption, then I'm guilty.
    Hi Jeanie

Please note that after all these years, the Jack the Ripper victim Mary Jane Kelly's supposed Irish and Welsh background remain unconfirmed. We seemingly know a lot about her life due to the stories she told her lover Joe Barnett, but no researcher has been able to confirm the details of her background beyond the fact that she was in Spitalfields in the autumn of 1888 when she was killed in her room at 13 Miller's Court, Dorset Street. Due to the fact that it has proved impossible to confirm any details about her earlier life, there are some who wonder whether Mary Jane Kelly was even the woman's real name.

    Best regards
