    Default Historic libraries get facelifts

Two of Liverpool's most historic community libraries are receiving major facelifts in 2006.

Sefton Park and Walton libraries, both built in 1911, will close from New Year's Day for work which will bring them into the 21st century.

Sefton Park Library, on Aigburth Road, will be shut until the end of April for redecoration and other work.

Walton Library, on County Road, will be closed for a month while redecoration and repair work is carried out.

The nearest branches are Spellow Library on County Road and Fazakerley Library on Formosa Drive.

    'Welcoming places'

Sefton Park Library will also have a new children's library and a "surfzone" with state-of-the-art computers, including free internet and e-mail facilities.

Customers are asked to use Garston Library on Bowden Road or Wavertree Library on Picton Road during the closure.

Between them, Sefton Park Library and Walton Library issue 170,000 items a year.

Council leader Warren Bradley said: "Liverpool's libraries are centres of learning right at the heart of the community and are used by many thousands of people.

"We are determined that they become more welcoming places where both young and old can learn."

The improvements will mean that eight of Liverpool's community libraries have been refurbished in the past four years.

    Default Liverpool's Central Library

Liverpool's Central Library will showcase books from a collection of more than one million texts after its multi-million pound revamp is complete.

The renovations, due to be completed by the city's year as Capital of Culture in 2008, will double the space for books at the William Brown Street base.

Liverpool City Council has asked the government to approve plans to spend almost £50 million on the work.

The Department for Culture, Media and Sport is considering the application.

    'Oldest and best'

Money would come from the department's Private Finance Initiative (PFI) credits.

Once completed, the Central Library is expected to become one of the key buildings in the city's World Heritage site.

Council leader Warren Bradley said: "The Central Library is one of the oldest and best used public libraries in Britain, with well over half a million visitors every year.

"This project will enable us to transform it into one of the best libraries in the country while at the same time ensuring it's preserved for future generations.

"It will just be one part of the fantastic legacy for the city after Capital of Culture 2008, and a first class facility where people both young and old can come and learn."

    Default Woolton and Wavertree Libraries

WORK begins this week on refurbishing two Liverpool community libraries.

Woolton and Wavertree Libraries will shut for several weeks while redecoration takes place.

Extra public computers are being installed at Wavertree with free internet and email access, and an area is also being set aside for story time sessions with children.

The number of books of interest to the Asian community will also be increased in time for the reopening on May 22.

Wavertree issues 60,000 books annually and receives 92,000 visits. Woolton Library, which opened in 1926 and is a former Methodist Chapel, is being redecorated inside and out and will reopen on May 30.

It issues more than 50,000 books per year and the number of people using it is increasing.

Council leader Warren Bradley said: "Our libraries are focal points for the community right across the city.

"The refurbishments will ensure they continue to be welcoming places where both young and old can borrow books and use the latest computer technology."

The improvements will mean that 10 of Liverpool's community libraries have been refurbished in the last five years.

During the closure period, customers can use any other library. The nearest to Woolton is Garston Library on Bowden Road or Hunts Cross Library on Kingsthorne Road.

People who use Wavertree can travel to Childwall Library on Childwall Five Ways.

Fines on overdue books will be waived during the closure period.

Let's hope that the closing time is put

    back to 9 o'clock.
Liverpool (Capital of Culture) must be one of the few places in the country to close its main library at 6 pm.

    My local library

    - Sefton Park - was closed for over a year for reburbishment.
Admittedly, it was badly needed, but we could have had a couple of porta-cabins (or even the

travelling library) as a temporary replacement, but no.

    Default Liverpool Libraries

I took this one yesterday In Allerton.

I went to Tesco for my mum to hand a sicknote In and do shopping so I found an excuse to take pics too afterwards.

Plus I wanted to start an Allerton set for a while since It's one of my favourite Liverpool areas and It's only a walkaway.

Not so bad quality but I might redo them another time.

Currently having a look at the fire station pics.

    It's a godlike place.

    It needs a Sainsbury's though.

There were plans to develop that spare land and library not long ago, but the plans were defeated.

IIRC Allerton Library was the place that Clive Barker spent a lot of time in before he started to write his own books.

Clive Barker went to Calderstones too just up the road.

My brothers got two signed books of Clive's.
