    Default finney/butts family

    Hi guys
I am after some help looking for my family history
My G G Grandfather was born in Liverpool in around 1806
I know he was a wood turner by trade and he moved to Birmingham about 1832ishi
I have found all the children births at st martins church in Birmingham but have
Been unable to find a marriage so im assuming that he married in Liverpool
He married an Elizabeth Horton or Orton born about 1810
My G Grandfather birth certificate said mother maiden name Horton and his brothers said Orton
I also have a problem as my G Grandfather used the surname Finney or Feeney
But the rest of the family used Butts and used Finney as a middle name
And at this time I have not been able to find out why?

    Thanks for looking
    Rich

Hi Rich, You don't say what your G G Grandfather's first name was! In the LancsBMD site, there's a William Finney married to a Eliza Horton in St Mary's, Oldham ...in 1878! Could they have decided to marry late?

    Ref: CE235/23/237

Hiya Rich ....there is a John Finney who is a Toolmaker marries an Elizabeth Lloyd 3rd December 1833 at St Nicholas Liverpool ....
Elizabeth Lloyd is a widow ...maybe her maiden name was Horton...the problem is her name
    Orton
    Horton
    Houghton
Haughton ......in early 1800`s it could have been spelt in any of these ways ....anyway ...go to www.lan-opc.org.uk/Search/indexp.html and then click on CLICK ...put in John Finney ..marriage....and search.....have a look yourself.....Horton /Orton/Houghton/Haughton is a predominately Lancashire name.....far too many Elizabeth Horton babtisms to decipher yours, but have a look.....allan

    Hi Rich,

I think the Marriage Cert. may shed some light on things? I'll wager that 'Butts' is probably John Finney's mother's maiden name, or possibly, Elizabeth Horton's mother's maiden name? That's if all the children are born after this date?

Good luck and let us know how you get on.

Hi Rich, I've just realised that their marriage is in 1831. Marriage Certificates orderd from the GRO only go back to 1837.

Marriages in 1831 would be recorded in the parish register [for All Saints]. This should be on file, or microfiche, in the local record office at Stafford or Birmingham, but unfortunately, I don't think this will give you the name of the parents?
