    Default Sefton Street, Litherland

Wondering if anyone can help me.

Back in the late 1800s my great great grandfather was the Bridge master on the canal and lived at "Canal Cottage" on Sefton Street (just by the site of the new Tesco). However, I've also seen a reference to the building as "Bridge House". Does anyone know if this is the same place? I note that a building at the location (called 'Bridge House') still exists.

Have you tried this Litherland site NNR?

I have, yeah. I just found it rather harder to navigate around than this. I suppose I should direct my queries there, but the message board seems a little less well looked after than this one...

I'll investigate your query but notice that the Liverpool records office is not that well equipped with Bootle/Sefton scenes as though another library may hold those - possible Crosby or Southport?

Ged, thank you for the offer!

I was at Liverpool Record Office yesterday but didn't see a great deal in relation to these areas. Of course, everything's getting packed away and packed off now pre-refurbishment, too...

Johnny Blue from Yo (who is as yet unable to upload photos to here) has noticed that this picture of Litherland Village lies very close to the area you are seeking. That's the Red Lion pub on the bridge.

Thanks to both of you for the 'photos.

I continue to live in the vain hope that some travelling photographer decided to document the bridge keepers of the Liverpool area at some point in the late 1870s - and that the pictures survived!
