    Default A Liverpool Gallery..

Hello everyone. I've only just discovered this splendid website and forum and this is only my second posting. I run an online history of, and guide to, this, my adopted home of Chester but also have a Liverpool gallery up there too- featuring a few of my photographs of the city from 1980 to the present- which you may care to mooch through sometime-

    Welcome to Liverpool!

    Default riots photographs...

I have quite a few more of the devastation left behind which I've been meaning to get online for ages. Your kind comments should act as an incentive to get it done!
i was there throughout the 'action', being one of the proprietors of a shop in Lodge Lane at the time and we stayed with the place to ensure its safety- not to mention that of the bedridden old lady in the flat above. Our place was left alone but my memories of the things I saw during those nights don't bear thinking about sometimes. Buildings on each side of us collapsing into the street in flames, stolen vehicles passing by, laden with swag...
I got 'set up' in Granby Street on the way home after the final night of trouble- I spotted a miniature bottle of brandy lying amid a sea of broken glass, picked it up- and promptly 'had my collar felt' by a copper waiting just around the corner. I spent the next couple of days in a cell but was 'lucky' to end up with a £50 fine for 'theft'...
I'm sorry I didn't have a camera to record it all but was nervous about being taken for poice or whatever... As I said, I did wander round the area over the following days capturing the mess though. Sadly, the majority of these pictures- and hundreds of others- were lost during a house move but a few survive, which I'll try to get online when I can.

    Default wow, what a place...

Wow, I've only just got here and feel at home already. Such a warm welcome- but that's Scousers for you. Years of living in Chester does weird things to your head and makes you forget...

I've been writing my online history, guide and galleries of this strange little town for some years now (URL below)- it's made me no money and earned me severe ****gings-off from the establishment for my troubles. Perhaps I should be concentrating instead on a similar project for Liverpool? I've certainly got the pictorial resources and a pretty good library of books old and new to call upon. Your opinions would be valued greatly.

SteveB- are you serious? You may get trampled in the rush. The main thing that's been holding me back expanding the Liverpool stuff on my site has been the intimidating prospect of handprinting hundreds of negatives, then scanning them, resizing them, monkeying about with them.. even before putting the pages together...

I haven't been handprinting as much as I did. The 'digital revolution' has meant that my bread-and-butter earners, especially weddings and portraits, have, after 30-odd years, pretty much died a death now that every bugger's got the kit and think they can do it just as well for themselves... So it's getting harder to raise the cash for the paper and chemicals now... ho hum.

What sort of quantities would you be willing to deal with? Can you do slides on it? I've got some crackers that sadly don't get seen much.
Sounds like a handy piece of kit, I envy you.

    • As an aside- and a doubtless stupid question from a newbie which probably should be posted elsewhere- can anyone advise how i can replace the Liver Bird (pretty as it is) at the top of my posts with my own picture? I uploaded a test mugshot but this seems to appear at the bottom, alongside my signature. Sorry- there's doubtless a perfectly good FAQ somewhere I'll now get told off for not reading but, you know- never one to read the manual, me...

    Hi Steve

I would highly recommend that you set up such a site for Liverpool. Now would be an ideal time to do it. As far as I know the only comprehensive site on local history is Mike Royden's site. Someone might care to correct that impression though.
