    Default Take-Off Zone (CTG)

    Take-Off Zone

We were the Boys Upon the Roof: the last year
of Rose Lane School, Liverpool, 1964,
no longer grounded, we'd shortly fly
    off in different directions.

But we still dutifully wore our ties
and some our black blazers stitched
with a red rose, even though some divested
ourselves of jackets, mugged or brooded

in rolled up white shirtsleeves -- it must
have been spring, warm at last
after another cold dark English winter.
One maverick waved hands and yelled,

"Hey, look at me!" A boy sat Quixotic
on another boy's shoulders -- but
    horseplay was ending: more
    serious matters to attend to
    -- a cruel world awaited.

I'm not on this picture which an old school friend sent me. He's the dark-looking guy third from the right. The photo was taken by another schoolmate whose reaquaintance I am making some forty years on.

Great photo Chris, it must bring back many happy memories. Fine words to. School Jacket: it made think of mine, and the state it usually ended up in at the end of term.

Thanks, Dazza. The photograph was a surprise when I received it several days ago, and yes it evoked memories.

I wonder where they are and what they are doing now. When I see old photos, it always strikes home to me how life has to end.

Indeed. One of my classmates is now an actor in Australia. Here he is: Leo Dove. When I knew him he went by the name of Leonard Dove and was one of the tops in the class, a bright fellow. Evidently he is now based in Sydney. I know he did some film and TV work in England before going to Australia.

I've not heard from any of my old class mates since I left school. I read somewhere on Friends reunited that a couple were doctors, a couple were cops, a few went into the civil service. A few went to the Navy, Royal and Merchant. Some are retired now. That really freaks me out. I wonder if they'd be shocked to know what I've been up to.

As noted above, I have recently heard from two classmates from Rose Lane after 40 years. There are a couple of others that I knew in school in Liverpool at Rose Lane and Quarry Bank, one living in Upton and another in Portsmouth, that I have kept in touch with over the years.

Ha, I hated all the kids in our school.

No, just never kept in touch.

Neat pic.... Health and Safety would never allow you up there now...

The school site is now the big Tesco, right?

    Thanks, AZ.

As noted, the pic is of fourth form boys at the Morrison Secondary School, Rose Lane, Liverpool. Yes you are correct about the Tesco's at the corner of Rose Lane and Mather Avenue being located where the school stood. Below is yours truly in a school group photograph taken in March 1964.

Incidentally the boy in the front row second from the right is Leonard W. Dove, who became a professional actor under the name of Leo Dove. He is now in Sidney, Australia, as shown on this acting site I recently found.
