    Angry Everton Library

I went past Everton Library today & noticed that large pieces of wood were on the pavement ,when I crossed over I found out they were from the tower
I love that building as it was my next doorneighbour when I lived in Petton Street ..........even though I lived next door my books were always over due

how long before the city firebug is called in

    It's depressing, isn't it?

    Everton Library.
    Lister Drive Library.
    The Florrie.
    And so on.

They'll all probably go the same way as the Listed, then de-Listed Beaufort Street School.
    ie: Demolished.

It would indeed be very sad to see another fine building with history gone.

Hi Mandy, thanks for the pics.

A very sorry state of affairs. I hope someone challenges this neglect.

The community group moved to the new Breckfield North Centre on Breckfield Road North, near to the junction with Mere Lane. There is an ex local Councillor who sits on the the local community commitee, it may be worth one of you calling in and speaking to him.

Everton Library is a beautiful building , it would be a shame if it was left to crumble further. Im sure the power of petition by the community could stop the rot.

    some history of the library

designed by Thomas Shelmerdine who also designed the City transport offices in Hatton Garden & Exchange Street Station now Mercury Court
erected in 1896 it housed both a library & technical college
It had separate reading rooms for ladies boys & general public
there is a plaque inside commemorates a former student of the college who won a Victoria Cross during world war 1

I think it is .....a few years ago the library together with the plots of land of Petton Street & Beacon Lane were up for sale as one lot.
