Default Church House, Lord Street c1900

Church House stood on the corner of Lord Street and South John Street (on the corner facing Debenhams). Built in the then fashionable Victorian Gothic, its red-brick and terracotta contrasted strongly with the Regency plasterwork which surrounded it according to Professor Charles Reilly. You can stop struggling.

It was officially called the Liverpool Diocesan Church House, and replaced an earlier 1870s building.
The foundation stone of the first section (shown in your photo) was laid by the Countess of Derby on 1 August, 1899.
That section was opened on 18 May 1901.
The second section was opened on 11 November 1912.
Memory tells me the architect was George Bradbury who was the Diocese's architect.
He designed at least half a dozen Liverpool churches.

The Diocese of Liverpool moved into their present premises in 1956 (the former Mersey Mission to Seamen.)

George Bradbury also designed the New Adelphi Cinema (opened 1922), probably the ugliest of Liverpool's purpose-built cinemas.

    That's interesting, Ged.
    1922 you say?
Perhaps Mr Bradbury was very old in 1922.
