Thread: Spillers/Rank Hovis Mill, Birkenhead

    Default Spillers/Rank Hovis Mill, Birkenhead

The old Spillers (later Rank Hovis) mill in Birkenhead, now being converted for the East Float development.

Unfortunately the last remaining unrefurbished building is now being prepared for conversion, but at least the buildings are being kept. Some of the old equipment was in there, but perhaps just as impressive was the structure of the mill, with it's carefully manufactured woodwork, staircases and floors.

    Thanks for the comments!

Just out of interest, does anybody know where the Liverpool Spillers mill was? I read that they had one either side of the river, but I've no idea where the other one is/was.

For the Liverpool Spillers building just look towards Dingle...you can't miss it (Mill St/Grain St) It used to be Wilson-King for years, then Spillers, now ADM. Some parts of the building are 100+ years old, but has had several additions over the years. Toxteth.net maps have it listed as South End Mills.

Excellent info, thanks for that. I'd forgotten about the mill up there. Oh well, at least Liverpool still has a couple of operation mills.

I believe I took pictures of the Mill Street mill back in the Sixties for a project on local mills for architecture class while I was at Quarry Bank High School.
