    Default London Road 1960

Here is another previously unpublished colour photograph of a prosperous looking London Road, in the days when it was an important shopping centre serving a densily populated neighbourhood. The year is 1960 judging by the film on show at the Odeon – Swiss Family Robinson – which was released that year. What catches the eye are [...]

Used to love the Legs of Man - where I first learned about cocktails and how delicous they were. There's also a thread on the forum regarding "Nanettes", which is also shown on the photograph.

    Thanks for postings.

That's probably an AEC Regent or a Leyland Titan bus going up the road there. I saw Swiss Family Robinson when it was showing at the Odeon. My dad worked part-time in the Legs of Man, The Lord Warden and The Courthouse in the late 50s and early 60s. His full-time job was a railwayman at Lime Street. Going back to the bus, the two cream bands were replaced by the boring line around the windows shortly after. The green of the Corpy busses originated in Nottingham. Liverpool gave the job of running the trams to a Nottingham man who replaced the maroon and light grey of the original Corpy fleet with green.

Great image Colin - colour makes all the difference. Thanks again for sharing.

Here's the same view of London Road, c.1900. Notice the earlier 'Legs of Man' Public House. No pub sign, but a series of three-legged manx symbols are incorporated into the window design.

London Road is where I got all my clothes in the 1960s/70s. Starting the gear my mam bought me in TJs, progressing to All Mankind when I thought I had a bit of fashion sense. Finally able to shop at Jonathan Silver when I started working, I still have a couple of tops I bought there!

Nice one Colin. I remember going home from my Grandads down London Road. It seemed to rival Church Street for shops, we used to walk down window shopping with me mum and dad. The old St Johns Market was a welcome sight. When I seen that, I knew we weren't too far away from the Wimpy by Central Station. I used to ask me dad if we could have one, we did, but rarely. Hamburgers in those days were quite exotic, not at all like McDonalds.

I remember Wimpey's [before MacD]. But I remember it being closer to Lewis's, on the same side?

I remember it being near Cases Street, where the chippy is now. I might be wrong though.
