Their loss is relatively easy to assess in terms of their architectural and historical merits. The Theatre Royal in my last post is one such building but it also illustrates precisely [...]

That's Queen Square to the left.
You have to be at least 50 to remember anything in this shot.
Great to see it in colour (which I prefer - never could understand why people rate B&W so highly).

I think this is the area? The map was surveyed in 1848 [with updates added through to 1864] from the superb 'OLD ORDNANCE SURVEY MAPS' series, the Godfrey edition. http://www.alangodfreymaps.co.uk/

The buildings in the photograph may be a later addition than those shown on the map? The image itself was taken from St George's Hall looking back towards Roe Street [left] & St John's Lane [right]

Hi Colin, I hope you don't mind I've used a thumbnail B&W version of your image to show location. If you object I'll remove it?

    Thanks Darren

I thought it was taken from the other corner further up Roe St on St. John's Lane though?

    Maybe not?

    Great maps aren't they?

Does anyone have any phots of that curve on the map. That was a row of shops if my childhood memory is correct. It always looked good to me. Tatty but good. Then the bulldozers came in, circa 1965.

I've seen that domed tower on the building that was just up from St. Johns House somewhere else, I'll have to dig it out to compare.

The photograph was taken from the corner of St John's Lane/Roe Street. This is clear in hi res - but obviously harder to pick up in low res.

Ged, I had the same thought but that tower, I think, is octagonal with the entrance on the side. I think the one on the photo is different?

Does anyone have any old photos of Queens Square. I've not managed to find any on Yo, or elsewhere else yet?

I'm sure some have been posted on Yo. I'll try and find the link?

I thought identifying Queen Square would locate it, but I admit (for you youngsters) it might not be obvious.
The Marriot Hotel is now on the right, and the Royal Court Theatre is out of sight on the left.
(Question: What was the original name of the Marriot?)

    Dazza.
Queen's Square - and more specifically, the Stork Hotel - have appeared on a few photos.

    Waterways.
Plenty of photos of those hotels about.
Greg's Dad took a great one in the early 1960s.

Interesting for me too! If my memory serves me well, I think the "Boy Scout Shop' was on that block way back in the murky past, around about 1946/7, and also 'The Wizards Den'!

Here's the same place from a different angle. Royal Court on the right and the entrance to Queen's Square on the left....
