Hi all,
I was wondering where the word "oller" as in the expression "the bombed oller" came from. We always shorten words here in L'pool but I cant think what oller is short for. Anyone know?

It came from the saying Hallowed Ground. This was usually wasteland owned by the church.

Hi Isni', welcome to Yo! Now,as for 'oller,I know what it is,but not where the word comes from,or what it's short for? Sure someone on here will, though!
Welcome Isni. I'm more interested in your name, where did that come from.
I think Zap is right on the Hallowed Ground. Heard that before.
Oller short for Holler ie when you talked loudly in the empty space it sounded like it was amplified hence Holler meaning loudly.
Here's a link to a similar thread on YO ! Hope it helps .

Hallowed ground is an old term for sacred ground. Anything that has been blessed by a priest, druid, shaman, whatever. Basically any ground that a holy man from any culture has blessed.
I don't think houses are blessed even after they were hit buy German bombs.
