Eldon Street pub name mystery, [southside junction with Vauxhall Road].
The pub is shown on a map dated 1938. But the site is empty on a later 1955 map.
So my guess is that it was part of the post war clearances.
Eldon Street pub [southside]. 'Thomas Nuttall' was the publican but unfortunately the name of the pub is not listed on the trade directory for 1893/4. It might appear on later editions which I haven't got access to.

Cold, slushy, slippery but I had to go back into town yesterday morning on foot from Kirkdale for my car after a marathon drinking session from 1pm til 2am. I managed a few snaps along the way. The last 2 pubs standing on Scottie where once there had been 77 listed.

A map from 1875 showing the ugly facts that there are 68 drinking places within 100 yards radius of St. Johns Market and how it is simply a disgrace to the authorities responsible for the licensing of such premises.
The text and map are courtesy of Freddy O'Connors volume one of four of a pub on every corner.
Count how many are there now. Probably not a lot has changed?

Amazing little map there, Ged! While I'm at it....can you name this former pub on the corner of Bankhall st? I go past it most days, but the other week I had a closer look, and realised that the window frames(?) are cast-iron,which I think is unusual, and wondered if there was any connection with other cast-iron framed buildings in Liverpool?? Also, the second pub, which is on Millers bridge/Derby lane, now a cafe!
Thanks!
Marathon drinking session, Ged? Bet you were on shandy again.
Out with Pablo yesterday - The Grapes, Flanagans, The White Star, Rigbys. Only 6 hours but my back teeth were afloat!
I'm struggling to even get my bearings on that map !!!

Hi Steve. Both on my site in their 1980s guises.
The first one was the Griffin which later became the Twist and Shout, used to drink there too, it had a red phone box in there too. The second was the Prince of Wales but I drank in it in the 90s when it was called Shenanagans - then down to the old Dockers Hook (now Kerrys but closed) to see the big dipper.

That is the Royal Court theatre on the left and you are lookinbg up Gt Charlotte st past the market on the right. Great Charlotte st now only exists from Lewis's, past Blacklers to the Precinct but used to run right down to Queens Square where the Marriot Hotel now is. There were 4 pubs in a row on Gt Charlotte street on the map (numbered 13-16) and 6 out of 8 properties in a row were pubs.

As you look down Upper Dawson street past the army stores on the corner, with the books, you look past the grapes and the sticky out bit in the distance is the curved Theatre Royal which became the Union Cold Stores and fronted onto Williamson Sq. When you are in the Precinct, the exists still show the way out to these old streets such as Dawson Way and Houghton Street etc even though they don't really exist as such now.

This view is looking into Queens Square where the fruit and veg were sold at the front of the Stork Hotel which was still there in the very early 70s. The Stork is mentioned on the map.

Houghton Street, looking up towards Cases St. You will notice that pub No.50 on the map is the Belmont as clearly seen on Colin Wilkinson's 1963 Colour photo of the street.
Map and 1st three pics in this reply courtesy of the LRO
1963 pic of Houghton St thanks to Colin Wilkinson
Last pic 2010 is mine.
Thanks for the names,Ged! You seem pretty familiar with the area,so here's another one, though I'm not sure if, it was ever a pub? It's on the continuation of Strand rd,towards Regent rd!
Never known that one to be a pub Steve, though it could well have been a long time ago.
