I'm really shocked by the picture of St Catherine’s Church in Abercromby Square as i'd not heard of it until today and can't even place where it might have been situated

In some places the historical preservation is hurting.

My sister works for St. Mary's church in Grassendale and they have had trouble with the inside plaster cracking, rotting and falling off due to unseen water leaks behind the plaster.

The painted interior white plaster was an add-on to the original design, but the City Preservation folks have demanded that it stay.

The areas being repaired look beautiful with the plaster gone and the red sandstone exposed - and this was the way the church was originally built - But, they are not allowed to restore it that far back - which would be cheaper and look better.

I hope the old churches being demolished are having their inside carefully removed and stored. St. Mary's had to get old tile from another church for floor repairs since replica tile is not being made.

Sometimes too much preservation on a functional, working structure is not a good thing.

Birmingham does not have more canals. It has longer canals, giving more length overall.

    Birmingham 35 miles
    Venice 26 miles

Venice does have a very dense network of canals, it is a tiny place in comparison to Birmingham, the whole of Venice would fit within Brum's Middleway with room to spare. In Venice canals are everywhere, Not the case in large Birmingham.

You have to get it into perspective.

Venice, St. Petersburg and Amsterdam are what Liverpool should aim to be. It can be likes these cities with its own water based identity. And do it quite easily if it wants to. I doubt the desire is there.
