Suitcases Left Out in the Rain

On the worn, drenched pavement,
the emigrants' abandoned luggage,

families who have travelled onward
to fresh possibilities, new horizons.

The port still sings their praise
-- though they have all gone away:

Kline and Mulldoon, Ngami and Kandinsky,
each hefting their heritage to the sun.
