A major tourist attraction and what have the council done with it?

Same as the Williamson Tunnels - nothing.

Maybe there is only money to be made from selling land off and knocking down buildings.

Work finally starts on the IGF site!

Work to restore part of Liverpool's International Garden Festival site, which lay derelict for a quarter of a century, is due to begin.

A £3.7m grant from the North West Development Agency will fund the restoration of the formal gardens. They will then be returned to public use.

Cheers, good news! Does it say anything about new housing in the latest plans?

no... from earlier news reports they are putting the housing part on hold until things pick up.. they want the gardens completed within 1 year.

Yeah, totally agree. Pleasure Island was badly managed by all accounts and that caused them to close... if only someone had bought them out and re-vamped it!

Isn't the place a toxic dump (it was the old tip, right?) and would be better off as a park - like Otterspool - rather than having folks live on top of it?

Don't hold your horses, this council have been promising to spend money on Newsham Park, the oldest of the larger Victorian parks and the nearest to the town centre. For the last five years at least, they have made statements in the Liverpool Echo of the millions to be spent on the park. I will believe it about the garden festival site when I see it.

It's not the council here though, it's private money/companies... they have started clearing the undergrowth already.

It's capped underground with clay.. methane is still extracted from the site and sold to energy firms to produce power.

Doesn't sound like very stable ground if the stuff under the clay is still rotting...
