Who'd have thought the chances of surviving the Bomb raid would have been under Queen Victoria, all four corners around her had suffered bomb damage.

she's suffered more damage since then with the kids hanging around there. I only noticed the other day that there's railings at the top of the steps around her now.
No chance of taking a nice pic of it anymore

Looks like the area has been cleaned up in that photo. Some damage all the same aint there. Musta been horrendous to witness that.
That was what was left of the Customs House. Like the Museum, it was gutted by incendiaries but, sadly, unlike the Museum, it was demolished.
See some pics of it on this page and those following it-

Incendiaries it seems.
buildings constructed of stone tend to resist incendiary destruction unless they are first blown open by high explosives.
I've read that the basic structure was still sound, but there was no government will to re-build it,as was the case, with several other official buildings around the city.
I have to be honest here and say...there's limit to what should be rebuilt and what shouldn't depending on the state of the building? and judging by the photos I've posted the whole of the internal structure has gone completly to rubble and its just doesn't seem viable to reconstruct something far gone as that.
We have to also take into consideration that if it were to be rebuilt then it just would not be the building of a bygone age, thats how I look at it myself.
Its the same as the cathedral that got bombed as well, why did they leave that standing? lets face it its gone and only the shell remains, what use is it standing on prime ground?
