From the Liverpool History Society list of Liverpool "firsts":

"1813 - Liverpool's first outdoor public sculpture (Nelson Monument in Exchange Flags), first paid for by public subscription."

Also, see "Nelson's Monument at Liverpool" from The Mirror of Literature Issue 338, 1828 (Gutenberg "e" book).

It probaly once had nice brass panals in its base as you can see where they once where. Now this plastic notice is all there is.

Any idea,or confirmation of the date, for this, Spike? Nelson died in 1805, but the dates for memorials/monuments can vary quite a bit!

No idea mate? seems a lack of info on this monument?

Would guess its a least a few years after his death in 1805.

Minerva on top of the Town Hall is dated 1801-1802 (source Public sculpture of Liverpool by Terry Cavanagh).
I can only find circa.1805 for the Nelson obelisk.
The obelisk at Allerton Golf Club is given a date of 1768 for the last marking (source Liverpool Council)

After Prince Ruperts Tower,Minerva is certainly the oldest, but what does the obelisk at Allerton commemorate?
