Very nice article of Molly Kool Carney. Very informative of her lifes career.. She was lovely as a young woman, and also in her 90's.. I bet she could tell a good story of her adventures...She looks like she had a very happy life on the Seas... Bravo to her..may she rest in peace..

Fascinating story Reg, I wonder how many femake skippers there are today?
Is it a life that appeals to the ladies out there? Let us know how you feel about being a leader in a one time "Mans" world ,l know from the calibre of some of the women I know that they would have coped well.

How about Anne Bonney and Mary Read, two well know Pirate Captains.
P&O had the first Lady Captain of a British deep sea ship and one or two coasters had ladies as `Masters`
I have flown around the world with Lady Airline Captains.
When I was in Esso`s 250,000 ton tankers we had female Cadets on deck, they found it difficult to do some of the jobs. When swinging on a 24 inch diameter valve one breast would swing under the arm and become trapped as she swung around the other way and she would end up in tears saying "my ti*s are too big for this job". some made Second Mate. When I was on the QE2 world cruise last year they had a very attractive lady Second Mate, I would never go for a smoko if they had them when I was a lad.

Had a lot of women officers in the Army. Like everything else, some were good and some were excellent. Hats off to those girls that done it and still are in Aghanistan.

No, Brian sadly. Tried for the Merchant Marine, Blue Funnel, when I left school. Offered a place in Gravesend. Also got offered a apprenticeship as a plumber, so I took that. Served my time as a plumber and thought there must be more to life. As you do. Joined the Army and seen the World. Been everywhere and done most stuff. Can't tell you too much on this site as it stays for all to see. I'm very proud of my service and will pass on my experiences.
My avatar really does look like me. Packed in smoking though. The pipe is just for bubbles.
