    Default The Circular ship "Novgorod"

The Russian Circular Battleship Novgorod and her Sister ship where the only two ever built. Designed by Admiral Popoff and Launched in 1873' It would be have to be one of the most unusual ships built.
The hull was round and intended to be a stable platform for the two !! inch guns, but she was almost unmaneuvrable at sea.
The Russian Navy thought that a shallow draught would let the ship into shallow waters?
The armament of this vessel was two 26 ton 11 inch guns on revolving turntables, .But the recoil of these guns would caurse rotation to the ship.
She was driven by six engines, with six propeller shafts, the boiler and engine rooms took up half of the hull space.
Both ships rolled even in slight seas, very slow,. hard to maneuver. But worst of all the ship would have to throw their single rudder very hard over during firing, to act like a water brake.
Both ships were in the Russian-Turkish war. They were scrapped in 1912.
    Informaiion..
displacement 2,500 tons, full load 2,670 tons.
    length...30.8m. beam 30.8m. draught 3.75m.
    8 coal-fired boilers, 6 screws. speed 7 knots.
    armament2-11 inch guns ..16-37mm guns..2-4 pounder guns.

I think Captain Kong would have had his hands full with this baby??

29 years of service? Surely seems a long time for those slow vessels of poor manuvering to continue on.. Yet, after undertaking on building them..they must of wanted to save face, and try to prove the design worthy... Maybe Reg...they were waiting for Captain Kong..

It looks a lot like a hovercraft. I never heard of these ships. Thanks for the info.
