    Default Aintree/Fazackerley Shunting

    Hi There!

I've been browsing this forum for about a week, loving the old photos.

I love trains, although don't know much.

I wonder if someone can help me with a query.

When I was a little lad in the very late 60's and early 70's, I remember being taken by my grandad to watch trains somewher between Aintree and Fazackerly.

My memories are that everything was very grey and dirty, almost all the momories are in black and white, save for the dirty blue and yellow of the diesel locos at the front of the trains, and the dark maroon of the brake vans at the rear.

We used to go on a bridge over quite a massive number of tracks, where there seemed to be trains waiting to be sent elsewhere, coal trucks, tanbkers etc. I remember it was very busy.

Here's my question, do any of you have any ideas where abouts it might have been, and do you have any maps or photos of the area.

It was a foot bridge, one of them latice style effects I think. It spanned a large number of lines

The photos i took were from a bridge like that. it spanned the tracks over Fazackerley sidings, then led to Signal works road. the photos were taken in1983. There was a lot more track there in the 60/70's ,all gone now

If anyone knows then merseywail does but....this is just a thought....
Are you sure it wasn't on the Transpenine Route ? I remember wooden sidings at Broadway. Maybe it was Rice Lane ?
    Oh well just a thought.
    Welcome by the way.

Would this be the bridge in question?

Sound almost certainly like Fazakerley Pre-assembly Depot that you visited, but heading towards Kirkby there were another group of sidings known as Fazakerley Open-Ended Sidings, these would have been used for general shunting and marshalling in the late 60s/early 70s, but by the mid-80s these were used for stabling permanent way trains and condemned/crippled wagons awaiting scrapping.
