A photographic exhibition paying homage to famous West Indians is being staged in Liverpool until the end of October.

The exhibition will run in Liverpool
    until the end of October

The "Pantheon of Outstanding West Indian Heroes" celebrates contributions to British, Commonwealth and world culture by people of Caribbean origin.

The display features a variety of heroes like cricketer Sir Viv Richards and civil rights leader Malcolm X.

Staged in Liverpool Central Library, the display has already toured parts of Britain as well as the Caribbean.

    Fitting tribute

Council leader Warren Bradley said: "It is fitting that it should be on display in Liverpool, as we have a long established West Indian community that is proud to call the city home."

Also featured in the exhibition is Lord Constantine, a cricketer who played for Nelson and was stationed in Liverpool during World War II as well as female classical composer Joyce Ferdinand, the late MP Bernie Grant and black writers, poets, artists, police officers, war heroes, nurses and inventors.

The exhibition, sponsored by Merseyside Police Community Relations will end when Liverpool Black History Month draws to a close on 31 October.
