The last but one pic says Eccleston Street on the wall, where was it?
Hi Ged,
Eccleston St is in Prescot, if i remember correctly they had a custom of throwing hot coins for the children to collect
Hi Pabs,
Not too sure, i remember seeing the picture years ago, it was an annual tradition that faded out after the war, i,m one of those people who store unimportant trivia
I'm guessing someone is throwing money to the ground from a window? judging by the looks and actions of the kids in this photo? see the hand in the top left...
Chances are if someone was to throw pennys out the window these days the kids wouldn't even consider bending down to pick em up...modern times..
What a great picture.. Lots of people young and old for the coin toss...
They toss candy in the streets or beads during the parades here.. and the kids go wild... I still pick up a coin ... I was always told it was lucky... I once found a $20.00 note.. Now, that was super...all for looking down on the pavement....Always room for one more coin..
Apparentlly it is an ancient custom called perrying, ie throwing heated coins to the crowd by actors in Elizabethian times, that particular picture was taken in the 1930,s outside the Town Hall.
So to confirm. That is Prescot town hall then?
Ha, who'da guessed..
Hi Ged,
Apparently so, demolished 1962, i used to live about a mile away and never knew they had a Town Hall, probably because it never looked like one in comparison to Liverpool Town Hall.
