I think that place used to have half a mini jutting out of the wall.

It's great seeing the pictures of the docks. I remember huge cranes loading and unloading ships straight onto the wagons. At Bidston docks, there were two giant ore cranes. It was a real shame to see them go. Dock is filled in now, for what seems to me, no apparent reason.

All Peel do is acquire land by any means - MDHC fillin Bidston though. Peel have filled docks in to make land. Land by stealth. They filled in Bidston Dock in Birkenhead, and do not need PP to do so, as it is for "industrial port use", they can just go ahead. They put a few sheds on the infilled dock space, which was always water being a part of the old Wallasey Pool. It could have made money just laying up the many idle ships around.

They should be made to excavate the dock as it was clear the land was not put to any good use.

No WW, they haven't put anything on it. Just filled it in. I don't know if anyone knows the reason for this. I seeem to remember that at the end of the dock, there was a sloping wall and a lot of water behind it. But that was like that for years.

WW, it all looks very nice. If that happens I shall eat my hat. I have seen so many pies in the sky ideas for Wallasey and Birkenhead. What the powers that be need to remember is that Wirral is a suburb of Liverpool. There is no way we should or could compete. There's too many of these shopping areas. If there is investment it should be in our town centres.

When Bidston Dock was completed - it did have a specific function to handle iron ore ships bringing in ore for Summer's Steel Works at Shotton.

The wet area beyond the dock was to have formed an extension should demand require it. A similar situation exists over at Seaforth, there is the unfinished basin north of the existing Seaforth dock which is now a nature reserve within the dock estate. This was also provided for future extension.

The interesting thing is that the new swing bridge was constructed across Bidston Dock around 1994. I think infilling started just 6 years after that!

One of the last ships to berth in Bidston was Sea Container's SUPERSEACAT THREE in the corner by the old Mobil works when she was being prepared for service at the start of the season.

If my memory serves be correctly infilling of the northern corner of the dock had begun before the ship departed to take up service.

What a waste of money the construction of that swing bridge was!

Yes, WW, I think all these councils are pulling in different directions. There does need to be a concerted effort and direction. Over the years I have heard of so many plans for Liverpool and Birkenhead, there seems to be a lot of money spent and then nothing. I don't know whether having a Merseyside Mayor will work.

Whoever did it aint gonna empty it. Too expensive. Another expanse of water lost. Other land locked towns and cities would give their eye teeth for what we got.

Agree with ya WW. It's a disgrace that future generations will look back in amazement. Is ther any example of a dock being emptied, I don't know of any, here or London.

Sorry WW, I never meant that. I was meaning has any other dock been filled in and then emptied of the rubble and refilled with water.
