    Default River Streets

Hello Ross - These are just the remnants of a whole complex - the name
'Close' says it all. The ones that used to be were really streets, some quite
long. Here are all those I can remember offhand:

Medlock, Leven,Nith, Dart, Stour, Doon, Avon, Orwell, Tawd ,Tyne

Some of these are again mere remnants, others have gone altogether, Orwell still exists as a proper street.

Then there's the Arthurian lot down Upper Warwick St. way; Merlin, Geraint, Enid, Elaine, Modred, Shallot and maybe others to be added.

I think there's some Dickens streets around L8 unless my imagination is playing tricks on me. Will have to go away and check that.

    Hi all

On receiving information on Tuesday on my maternal grandfather, George T. Matchett's World War I service for a presentation I am giving this coming Saturday in Philadelphia at a military history meeting, I was surprised and delighted to learn that he lived for a time in one of the "Welsh" streets in the Dingle.

Specifically, here is the information I received from my researcher on my grandfather joining the Territorial army cavalry in 1913:

    George Thompson Matchett

    Attestation papers:

Name as above and born in Toxteth Park, Liverpool, Lancashire.
He was a British Subject aged 21 years.
He was employed as a clerk with Coggins and Griffiths, stevedores, at Robert Street.
Home address: 3, Powis Street, High Park Street.
He was joining the Territorial Force of Lancashire for 4 years to serve in the Lancashire Hussars [Yeomanry].
Signed by Geo T Matchett [witness illegible] on 1st May 1913

My grandad was later transferred in 1916 to the Lancashire Fusiliers and would serve the remainder of the war in a service batallion of the Fusiliers out in Macedonia helping to convoy supplies to the battlefront from Salonika (present-day Thessalonika), Greece, where the joint British-French expeditionary force was based.

I had known he had lived in Beaufort Street and Merlin Street in Toxteth Park, and was educated at the Harrington Board School. That he had lived in Powis Street was new information to me. Is Merlin Street also counted as a "Welsh Street"?

Thought some of you might be interested in the above!

    Chris

Has your researcher sent you actual copies of his Service Record documents?
If not they are available on the Ancestry site. If you want them let me know and I will PM them to you. They show a later address in Garston.
