Default Sydney Jones library University of Liverpool

Two city poets are opening the University of Liverpool's redeveloped Sydney Jones library.

The ?17m project, which has taken two years to complete, has extended the original library into the university's former headquarters, Senate House.

It has opened up more space for more than 1.2 million books, teaching rooms and a cafe with outdoor terrace.

Roger McGough, who is opening the site with fellow poet Brian Patten, said investment in libraries was "vital".

    Honorary degrees

University librarian Phil Sykes said the building, named after former Lord Mayor of Liverpool Sir Charles Sydney Jones, was among the best university libraries in the country.

"The building is proving enormously popular with students who appreciate the way in which it combines bright, modern, technology-rich areas with facilities for traditional quiet study," he added.

Roger McGough and Brian Patten, who both hold honorary degrees from the university, will perform the official opening on Thursday evening.

McGough said: "It is vital that we maintain investment in our libraries for future generations to enjoy.

"Providing modern day access to knowledge thorough online journals and 24-hour access to library facilities is exactly what is needed and I am delighted that the university is dedicated to providing this for its students."

The library is not just for University students. Members of the public can also get a reader's card to consult books in the library but cannot take books out. Parking at the University is the main problem, so get there by bus.

The Uni has done itself proud with this building. They have turned the monstrously ugly (sorry award winning) Senate House into a really nice place to be. A smattering of applause please.
