    Exclamation Holyoake House Smithdown Road

Beatles landmark up for sale at ?800,000

Oct 25 2008 by Staff Reporter, Liverpool Daily Post

A FORMER Liverpool music hall that played host to The Beatles, and has since been transformed into a bar and eaterie, has gone on the market for ?800,000.

Holyoake House, on Smithdown Road, was built between 1913 and 1914 as a co-operative store with a music hall, known as Holyoake Hall, on the floors above.

Designed by architect Evan Roberts, the venue became a popular nightspot with both revellers and performers, including The Beatles, who played there on several occasions during the 1960s.

The building remains a local landmark and, following an extensive restoration programme, has operated downstairs as Mustard Restaurant and Bar, with space for 90 diners, while a number of luxury apartments were developed in the space formally occupied by the music hall.

Christie & Co, the property agents handling the sale, is seeking ?800,000 for a free-of-tie, 999-year lease.

Here's one taken a few years ago. Before the building was put up, the site was used for religious purposes. Originally it was the Calvary Church and then St Barnabas. This was a corrugated iron building. It was demolished following the completion of St Barnabas, Penny Lane. The original St Barnabas church hall still survives as Fogherty's pub. The part of the site is still used for religious purposes as it houses the Penny Lane Mosque.

The Holyoake building falls within the original Toxteth Park boundary

    Default Krazy Kuts

It was Krazy Kuts for years I got a job there. It had one big problem the same as TJ's has got now, and that is it was outside of the main shopping area, the tesco supermarket always out did it. At times it looked derelict but if you take a closer look you can see it is quite a substantial building. The hue of the brick is asylum like that is a bit off putting, yet with some imagination I am sure it could be transformed.

It was a hall owned by the Co-op and was available for hire.
(As were others in large Co-ops).
Mainly used as a dance hall.
It was never a theatre or a music hall.
I'm interested to hear that Max saw a Christmas play there, but that wouldn't make the building a theatre.
    BTW Max, you're 22 - wasn't the Co-op closed in the 1980s?
