Thumbs up No 1 Rokeby Street

    Hi
Is there anyone out there who knows what the name of the pub at No 1 Rokeby St was called? I think there was one called The Windsor Castle but not sure if it's the right one. I know it was owned by Bent's brewery. My great grandparents ran it from 1917 - 1925 and I'd be interested in any pictures or information about it.

    Thanks

    Hiya Alimik
    I've checked my directories for 1911 & 1938
Rokeby St isn't listed at all for 1911 & there are no pubs listed for 1938

however at the corner of William Henry St/Rokeby St there was a Eagle Vaults listed
I will check my "pub on every corner" book to see if I can find any photos

    Default No 1 Rokeby St

    Hi
Thanks for that, a picture would be brilliant. I found the address of the pub listed in the license application book at the Liverpool Records office but it didn't have the name of the pub, just the address as 1 Rokeby St. I didn't have time to stay and search the directories, hopefully next time I will. Apparently my grandfather was beaten unconscious outside the pub during the police strike of 1919 and he never recovered, dying in January 1920 leaving my grandmother to run the pub and bring up several young children on her own. She gave up the license in 1925 and moved to 144 Mount Pleasant which apparently had a sweet shop attached. I don't suppose you could look that up in the directories could you please? Her name was Margaret McDonald.

    Thanks again.

    Hiya Ali
Mrs Margaret McDonald was still at 144 Mount Pleasant in 1938

I'm sorry I couldn't find any photos of the pub for you

    Hi Mandy

Thanks very much for looking. I don't suppose you have any pictures of 144 Mount Pleasant do you? Apparently it was called the Phoenix Coaching Inn until 1921 when the license was rescinded and it was turned into residential property.

    Thanks again
