Default Gold Cross - Pavement, Church Street

I went on a history walk, related to the slave trade, in the Liverpool today and one of the things that was discussed was the original church, St Peter's, which was in Church Street - well gone of course. This led to a discussion about the small gold cross - which I remember very well, and so did others so:

Does anyone know what's happened to the small gold cross that was in the pavement outside the old Woolies building in Church Street? The cross, I believe, was a memorial for the original church, knocked down for road widening.

I hope that it hasn't been lost in all the renovations - because it's a part of our city's history and I always remember it being there.

I'd be grateful for any news on this.

    Thanks!

I've mentioned this in a few threads as my gt grandparents married in St Peter's, Church St. as far as I'm aware it's still behind the hoardings that are up for the renovations to Top Shop etc.

I'm actually waiting to hear back from an inquiry I made to Grosvenor a few days ago about the cross. as soon as I get a reply I'll post it up.

here's part of the wedding certificate showing the church

Thanks for replying - that picture and certificate are brilliant. Will show them to the person who lead the walk.

Will wait for those hoardings to come down and check for the cross and will be very interested in what the developers reply.

    Thanks again.

I suppose it's possible that the original pavement, complete with cross, is still beneath the new paving... hopefully!

    Here's a link to a thread from 2007...

It's still there and visible now that Keys Court has opened.
It's brass, not gold, and has suffered some damage.

TUT. will have a look next week when I go into town. If it's really bad I may be sending another email to Grosvenor.

Here's the info. page from Toxteth.net (the picture links don't work, though).
St Peters Church, Church Street, Liverpool
The cross had tar stains when I photographed it two years ago. I noticed the slab/cross last week.

    Marky.
It's because we've been linking back to toxteth.net that it's come off.

Ironically, it's interesting that we can still link back.

Luckily the Web Archive stores pages and pages of 'lost' websites. The information pages will probably be available for a couple of years yet.

The cross was put there to mark where the Church had been, not where the alter was.

If you ever pass St Helen's Parish Church and hear the 10 bells being rung, they were the actual bells taken from the Pro-Cathedral on Church Street and I always get a shiver knowing I'm listening to exactly the same sound as how Church Street would have heard them many years ago.

Strictly speaking, it marks the boundary of the site of the church.

Thanks for the pictures quincyp. I'm going down town next Wednesday so will have a look at it then. I also want to see St Peter's Lane, which I beleive has been opened up? Do you know anything about this?

Funny how the mind plays tricks upon you - I looked at it today and I had remembered it as much bigger than it actually is.
