    Default research help needed!

Not sure if I'm posting this in the right place or not, apologies if wrong, but here goes.

I am interested in true crime, murders etc.. and I'm looking to write some articles about British murderers from history, and of course include some from Liverpool. What I want to know is, where can I see trial transcripts and coroners reports etc?, Could I view them anywhere online or would I find them in central Library? or elsewhere if not there?.

Any help would be great thanks

    Brian

    Hi Brian,
For trial records you may have to go to Public Records Office in London
Archive centres local to the events may have some details especially inquests
I doubt if there will be anything online except a few years ago they began placing Old Bailey trials online so some may be on there
Just do a such for old bailey trials

    Hope this helps

    Thanks Ged and Steve,

The Liverpoolmurders website looks good, thanks Ged.

I have had a little look on the old bailey site Steve, but need to spend a bit more time there with the specific cases, when I decide who to look into more closely.

I'll take a trip to the library to see how far I can get with their help.

Thanks Ged, Steve and Fortinian for your help.

    Hello Brian

As you will have seen, the Old Bailey On-Line site has a lot of good stuff on it but I think they are a long way from putting later 19th century or 20th century trials on-line, which I assume you may be most interested in.

A quick and dirty way to get the transcripts of some famous trials, e.g., The Trial of Mrs. Maybrick, The Trial of George Chapman, etc., is the Notable British Trials series published in the early 20th century. While these books cannot be 100% relied upon for every word of the testimony -- I have been told that the testimony they published comes from newspaper reports rather than from the actual court papers -- they do give a fairly complete rundown of the main testimony of any one trial which you might wish to doublecheck against an actual transcript. These volumes can be obtained at a reasonable price on ABE Books and elsewhere.

    Good luck to you, Brian.

    All the best

    Hello Chris,

Yes I think you right with the old bailey site not being complete yet. As for the time period I'm interested in, I do prefer the older cases, but finding reliable and correct information is, obviously, harder the further you go back in time.

Thanks for your suggestions on the notable British trials series, I will look into them to see if it's an option, price wise.

    Thanks again

    Brian

Just a quick update to let you know how i've got on. Central library put me onto the national archives in Kew. They keep all sorts of records such as, military, births, deaths etc.. well worth a look!

They do, however, charge for getting copies of whatever documents you may require, so make sure you have your facts right.
