Rocket Air Raid Shelter
Anyone know anything about this shelter? Or where it stood?
It was hit 3rd May 1941. Many died.
The Rocket air raid shelter was on a triangular piece of land between Oakvale Church and the Rocket flyover, close to The Gardener's Arms pub at the junction of Broadgreen Road/ Edge Lane Drive.
Any pics of the area then?
-
'The Green' housing estate containing flats were built on it in the 1950s, it is still there now, now long renovated as I got pics for my site.
-
I know The Green.
Trying to locate the spot the shelter stood on Ged? Doubt im gonna find it.

They built these E Type shelters underground on open Ground. So anybody got an old map? we need to look for open ground on one?
I have found a story saying many of the victims had come out of a local dance hall.

Mart may have one Spike, i'll give him a nudge.
-
Mart knows somebody who has told him about this. Im sure he will tell us later.
-
Spike, go to http://www.old-maps.co.uk/ put in L13 5SF and select the Gardeners Arms. Select the 1951-52 map and you'll see triangular shaped land where it stood which has flats built on it today that face on to Edge Lane Drive and Queens Drive.
Spike, I presume that it's the recent Echo story that brought this to your attention. It's also mention here http://www.caringonthehomefront.org....thleen-thomas/ and states that it was May 1941 when the shelter received a direct hit.
In fact, nail that down as the 3rd May that it was bombed (Parkes, Evelyn and Parry, John) - http://www.liverpoolatwar.co.uk/p.html

Nice one for the map.
Ive been waiting till I had the time to do this Shelter. Mart put me onto it a while back. I have the names of those that died. Will have a page up later.
Cheers :PDT11

I saw the Echo story the other day.

Spike,
I'm sure the one I heard of was nearer to the end of the M62, towards Thomas Lane ( could be wrong though ), near Hunters site.
There is apparently a tree standing over the site, I'm sure it was the Bowring park Road area !
I've emailed my source, I'll ring him later if you don't ! !

I have given the Shelter its own page on the Website. Ive uploaded details of 29 people who died after the shelter was bombed.
Im going to go along for some photos when I can be sure of the location.
Any info or pics would be most welcome. The page will get more added to it in time.

look at the families THOMASEN and YATES. So sad.
-
Brilliant Spike - so sad, particularly the ages of the kids. I had no idea about this direct hit.
-
Come out of the turnpike tavern and right in front of you, the central reservation.
We ( my source and I ) believe it was here but I think the council would be able to pinpoint it surely.
The small tree in the middle, we believe , is a marker, though we could be wrong.
It was close to Lucas Factory, an underground site.
We think it may have been mentioned on the Merseyside at War video, have to check that out.
Also may be mentioned on a Bowring Park video, worth a looksee.

Hi Mart
I dont think it was by the Turnpike. Maybe they had a shelter there? But I give these reasons.
If you look at the list of those that died on the webpage.
http://liverpoolremembrance.weebly.c...t-shelter.html
Notice some of the addresses. Statton Road, Warnerville Road, Oak Vale. They are right by the Gardener's Arms pub and The Green. Two families with young children are listed. This was the heaviest night of bombing we recieved. They would have got to a close shelter. Walking the kids down to a shelter near to Broadgreen Station would be a risk, and why would so many from the area do it?
Then the story on the site from Hilda Dison has " There were many tragic bombings very close to us. Many young people died in a large underground public shelter on Queen's Drive near Broadgreen Road " Again by the Green.
The letter in the echo last week mentions the Shelter placed in the location of the Green.
Im looking for a map that shows when Thomas Drive came through the area.
-
I'm only repeating what my Source said.
They also said the flyover had to be rerouted past the green as they couldn't dig part of it up as it was an old Cholera Pit !
-
I can't see that it was rerouted Mart as it doesn't deviate off the course of where Queens Drive has always been. Source been on the sauce?
-
I know you are Mart.
Just going on what is said in the Echo and The Story.

How many houses where over by the old Lucas Factory? Maybe the Shelter there was for workers?
