Torr Street, Everton (inc. Rock View)

Dear all,

Whilst looking at the story of my Great Grandfather's sister I found that, shortly after she married in 1911, she lived on Torr Street in Everton. Now, confusingly, the particular address is given as '3 Rock View'.

I knew that Rock View was one of the old tower blocks, but obviously that wasn't around in 1911, so I presume it's the name of one of the 'slum' terraces on Torr Street. Just quite a coincidence that it's the one they named the towerblock after!

What I was wondering is whether anyone has any photos of 'old' Torr Street, before the tower block was constructed, perhaps showing some of the old housing...?

Not many pics were taken aound this area befoe the slum clearence? asI used to live 3 streets away ie off York Terrace/Albion Street.

That's one huge hospital down by the Gordon St. end. When did that appear/disappear...?

Thats John Bagots Hospital which was in the middle of the two steepest declining streets in Liverpool.
The map is dated 1927 so therefore the Hospital would be around 1890's?

Ah, yes. Those streets with the handrails on...?

It's odd about that hospital. My Great Grandfather (who lived on Robsart St - right next to it) was rushed off to Mill Road Infirmary in 1921 shortly before he died (aged 31). Odd that he didn't go to this John Bagots one. Or was it not for the poor...?

JohnBagots was a "Fever"Hospital ie any various cases of fever and the patient was sent here.

I lived in Torr Street in 1980's & would love to see pics of the old houses or even the flats I lived in

Torr Street is now Hartor street at the Netherfield rd end & Joshua Close at the St Domingo Rd end

Nethy end is Torr Street,its short but its still retained its name.

its a recent change George....maybe a year or two at the most ,a friend moved into the new houses when they were first opened

All they had to do Mand was retain the name and called any close offit TorrClose. silly sods.

Correct Mandy...my cousin lived in the flats near the top end on St Domingo Rd..
there is an old photo about claiming to be of Torr St...
if I remember correctly it shows bricklayers building the flats around the late 50's, early 60's..I think !

It's a pity there are no LRO ones of the old terraced Torr Street, they only have a few photos of the flats being built in the 50s.

I'd be inclined to look fo Aerial Photographs,Ged...simply because they would need these for new housing stratedgy after the clearence of the area.

Do the LRO photos of the flats being built contain any evidence of the original tenement housing...?

No, there's just a small number of photos of the bricklayers actually building the flats as mentioned earlier - this after the terraced streets have succumbed.

Cheers for that. I presume the streets themselves wouldn't have been much different from the others 'round that area. I have one of Robsart Street (where my Grandmother was born) which serves the purpose of the tenement housing very well I think...

Robsart St No.9 Court in 1959 - you know where ;)

I was the first with the file out although it'd been available for over a year so it's likely the only place you'll see this photo.

The Big One....

Would this have been taken from the top of St Georges Heights?

Forget that,seems it would not have been as its not far enough along Heywoth street for the shot.

Hmmm! what high vantage point would have given this shot? prolly a Telephoto lens used?

Only if they have moved half a mile nearly south and shot up half a mile...!

I would imagine so, probably quite a lot...
I cant see them going up in a plane to take one photo..


Photo shows...
Crosbie, Canterbury and Haigh heights on William Henry Street.
...each was 15 storey and 41 metres high..

Ah, I didn't know said photo actually had a court number given! My Nan was at Number 13. I wonder what 'name' Number 9 had? Number 13 was the salubrious "Cambridge Terrace"!

That's a beautiful aerial photo. When's that from? I see the clearances are well, well underway!

I can see the watertower, but can't see any other landmarks with which I'm familiar (although I wouldn't say I know Everton at all well, really!) - anyone care to point to Netherfield or Domingo's or a church or two...?

St Domingo is not in this shot,the circle starts at Brougham Terrace ie west derby road....the 3 high rise flats in the mid distance are Sheil Road Heights....following the dark line I have put this is Everton Road.

Netherfield Road is the road immidiatly in front of the tower blocks at the bottom

Shaw Street is immediatley in front of the 3 heights..
Netherfield Rd South starts approx 200 yards or so to the left..
at the top of Everton Brow.

Better man than I am then...and I lived round there. lol

As Mr F pointed out shaw street is immediatly in frontofthe towerblocksat the bottom,in fact you can just see a bit of colligate by the church.

Get google map up at shaw street end and you should be able to locate streets more easily.

My head was buzzin with this photo as I was only a nipper round there ie St Domingo/Albion Street end.
