Anyone help me obtain pictures of these schools during the 1950's? I lived next to Rossy school at 79-81 Roscommon St and the back of our house led onto St Peters school which I attended in the 50's. Any help would be much appreciated. Regards to Ged, ItsaZappathing and others, just waking from my hibernation.

I went to both of those schools and during the 50's.
Mr Grimshaw headmaster at Sackville St. Mr Walker one of the teachers who tought me.
Roscommon St, headmaster Bothom, teachers, Hughes, (Woodwork) Bozie, (Woodwork also tought the lads boxing)
Williams, (Music) Other teachers , Jack Lyons, Fred Tunstall, who went on to become the headmaster at Colomendy.
I will post some pictures of both schools as soon as possible.

Great to hear from and thanks for the early response. I went to St Peters but the headmaster at that time was Mr Stokes. I left in 1960 and my final form teacher was Mr Bookless. Mr Platt was the school caretaker and he lived a few houses down in Sackville St. My elder brother, Les Evans, went to Rossy, also my younger brother Ron but I went on to the Collegiate. I do recall Les recounting his experience of Bozie. Looking forward to seeing the pics,

Hello Chas, I remember Mr Stokes did take over from Grimshaw and I remember Mr Platt the caretaker, dont remember Bookless.
I left Rossy in 1956. Did you ever go to the Shewsy club?
Hi Samp, I was in touch with Mr Bookless's wife recently and she let me know he had died. She told me a little of his history and he'd been a prisoner of war held by the Japanese but he never brought any of this out in his lessons. A very quiet and calm man is how I remember him.
I did go to the Shewsy, a great boys club. I played billiards and eventually played snooker upstairs. It kept us off the streets and was well run. I still think of the thick hot buttered toast which you could buy there for a penny a slice. I'm sure you know that I'm talking about when a pound was worth 240 pence. I'm 61 this year, how old are you?

Last three are St Peters, view from top of Sackville St, View of Fire escape girls yard, view of infants entrance in boys yard, note the outside toilets on the right, bloody cold in winter!
I have some pictures of pupils from before your time If you are interested but will have to search them out.

Over a dozen gone on my site yesterday. Sackville st - 2 and 3 storey houses, also back Rossy as well as them undergoing demolition and the site afterwards. One looking towards the old Shewsy on Portland Place too as well as the rear of Rossy new school, the 50s and 60s flats and up towards Nethy and the high rise.

Found a couple of personal pics of my childhood in Rossy.
1st pic shows me and my younger brother on a sunny day on the back of my dad's lorry which was partially to blame for the window ledges condition (see pic 3). Brickwork to the left is our house then the house next door. Third house is a bombed house.The fancy barriers are to deter us from gaining access to the bombed house.Then there is Joey Charnock's house with trees showing, and the final house on the block where a man called Len lived with his wife. Looking into the distance there are other buildings of the same era so this pic was taken before the high rises were built. Pic could be 1954-55. Samp's first pic shows a view from the front of these final three houses
2nd pic is Joey Charnock who lived three doors away (his house had a garden!). He's standing in the doorway of St Peter's School yard with the upper railed yard behind him. The newly built high rise flats are visible in the background.
3rd pic is taken at 79/81 Roscommon St where we lived. next to Rossy School. The window ledge has taken a bit of a hammering (explained in pic1).

Just spotted this thread and although not from the area, I do enjoy seeing the pics and reading about life back then ( well just before my time ! ) thanks to all.
Sackville Street old and new. Taken in 1960 showing what was to be lost and the new heights going up on Garibaldi street which took their names from Italian reformists. Pic from Liverpool Echo archives.

The photos were taken by my brother, I'll ask him to identify the lads. Apologies for my late reply.
I've just been to LRO and have requested a lot of pics that were donated by Mr Bookless (god bless him). The quality is variable but it's great to know that he had the foresight to have them preserved. I found one photograph of the premises where I was brought up in Roscommon Street, and a few others of Rossy, back Rossy etc. which I will post online when I receive them.

Its pure luck that I have logged on tonight, I am not on the site very often these days. I see you are still looking for old rossie photos.
If you can call down to the 'Shewsy club' in Langrove St any Friday morning from 10.30am to 12.30, there is a group of us there who are recording the history of the club. There are plenty of photos to see and maybe there is something of interest to you.
Hope you can make it sometime, just ask for the archive team!

Do you know of any access restrictions as I'll be in my wheelchair, the last time I was there I was fairly mobile ( and my car was taken and found around the corner undamaged, but that's another story)? Can I save any photos to a USB device or do I have to photograph them individually?

I've used a photo program to automatically enhance the contrast and brightness after discarding the colour info which was the brown colour of age. Apart from that the photos are untouched.:noid:

There are a few more photos from the school that were saved by Mr Bookless (headmaster) in 1972. He's now dead but his wife is in a care home in Wigan. Today I got a return call from his son,Don, who knew nothing about the folder his dad had left in LRO. I told him about Yo Liverpool and says he'll get his son to look it up.

Here are 3 more St Peters pics, thanks go to Mr Bookless and LRO. They appear to be of the St Peters centenary in 1957? I haven't mentioned it before but the photos are from a mixture of newspaper and holiday snapshots etc. More on their way after they've been digitally cleaned.

Once again I have just logged on at an odd moment and noticed your photos. On the first batch of photos, the next to last photo, shows Stanley Coleman sitting in the middle, his older brother Ray was in our class and I knew the family well. His oldest brother was John Coleman, who was a mate of my older brother. Both Stan and John are dead now. I did see Ray a couple of years ago and we had a few pints for old times sake. The last photo in the batch, shows a couple of my relations. The lad with the ball between his legs is Alf Shaw. the lad to the left of the goalie, is a relative, Freddy Wood. He still lives in the area of Salisbury Street. The teacher is Mr Milroy who started in Sackville St when I was there.
Regarding the visit to the club, I hope you did not turn up on Friday 8th as it was the annual visit by the club to Shrewsbury School. I will be there next week, hope you can make it. There is wheelchair access at the club.

Good to hear from you, I couldn't make it to the Shewsy last Friday but I do intend to go this week. Glad you've recognized a few schoolmates and relatives, there are close to 150 pics stored at LRO, all of them save by Mr Bookless, then headmaster. Also preserved by him is a schools inspector's report( below).

Where is it? Some pics at LRO are filed as Roscommon St but I can't be precise on their actual location.
Here's one where the only identifying feature is a painting of a cow on wall (near RH side). Presumably a dairy, might ring a few bells!

I also notice Chas that on your last pic, Leander Street is possibly the name of the street in the background which although the Everton area, it is not covered on your Rossy area map. Perhaps you just got an Everton CPO area folder out?
