I have the plot details somewhere. It is not an easy grave to find as it is not marked with a number. They talked me to the grave over the phone. Let me know what you think Steve. Have a look at the plastic placard that is on the grave and you may able to see the faded name "George Kelly" on it if it is still there.
It seems that the final sentence on my previous post may have been misinterpreted by some of you as I was actually referring to the families of those who were murdered. From what I've read on here about poor George Kellys remaining family, well nothing to say really as it's already been said.
Having just been to visit my parents and mentioned this thread to them I've found out that my Mums family were pretty friendly with the Connollys. Mums family (the O'Malleys) lived in Hurst Gardens and as kids grew up alongside the Connolly family. Mum couldn't speak highly enough about them so I think it only right to mention a couple of things she mentioned.
When my Auntie Marjie was only two she actually fell from the wall outside the tenement that the O'Malleys lived in, a drop of about 40 feet I'm led to believe. One of the Connolly girls (sorry, she couldn't remember which one) actually caught her and broke her fall, saving her from serious injury.
She spoke very highly of Eddie Connolly as she always remembers him being really good to them when they were kids and he always made a fuss of my Nan. She tells me he was once a compere at Allisons and "one of the most handsome men she'd ever met" (Dad just grunted at this stage!!).
Finally, until recently she worked as a domestic with Eileen/Irene Connolly up at Whiston Hospital. They got on really well as they were both grafters.
I know none of this has anything to do with the case but just thought some of you might find it interesting.

A long time ago Charles Connolly told me that Balmer had committed the Perfect Murder. He got the State to kill George Kelly. Eileen is a lovely lady.

Re.Irene Connolly, she is Charlie Connolly's sister. Eileen Connolly is his wife. So which one worked in Whiston Hospital?

I think all the kids used to play on a piece of old wasteground close by (didn't they used to be called an oller??).
Mum may have gotten confused over Eddie's exact role. She remembers him being at Allinsons as my Uncle Joey used to be in a band and played one of his first gigs there.
No Doris O'Malley in the immediate family so just a coincidence there I think, but you never know!!!
It was Irene, Charlie's sister, that Mum worked with at Whiston hospital.
Talking about the case to Mum opened up memories that she hadn't thought about for a long time I think and she reeled off a few stories about her time in Hurst Terrace, most of which I'd never heard before.
I sailed with Eddie on one of the Canadian Pacific liners. The Empress of England or the Britain in the 50s or early 60s . I met him again at the very first book launch in The Globe in Cases Street,
I also sailed with their Dad, Mr Connolly senior, I cant think of his first name at the moment, had many a good talk with him about Charles`s case, from August to December in 1955 on the Cunard White Star Liner Georgic.
The Cameo Conspiracy is sometimes a difficult book to obtain. You may find it on Ebay and i'm not sure if George has any left. Do you want me to ask?

Great photograph Steve. But it seems Underworld is still correct. Still no gravestone after five years!!
I think everyone - least of all the Kelly family - owes Mr Lou Santangeli an enormous debt for enabling us to see the man given a proper grave (even without a gravestone) instead of being unceromoniously dumped under the prison officers car park at Walton prison.
That picture is very sad. George Kelly should have a decent headstone. I wish I could just go out and get one - the man deserves something better than that mess.

Was it a used copy and was it the 2001 edition?
I've read both and the 2001 was much more professional in every way, and contained much more detail than the Avid 1998 version .
I have 3 copies Dick. One is the yellow first edition, one is the second edition and one is a signed copy with a monogram from George Skelly that is wrapped up safe. I wonder how much that one is worth. Priceless to me!
Just started reading the book, obtained via Wirral Libraries, only to find pages 59-64 are missing:disgust: Any chance anybody who has the book could possibly forward them to me?? Don't want to read any further until I get them.

It was all performed light heartedly, al la Keystone cops. While he would wiggle and wreath, grunt and groan,[for f/x] his mate would go 'round the gathered crowd with 'the cap'. I myself witnessed the escape act at the pier head, it must have been on a weekend [summer] because a lot of people where coming and going on the ferries. Another stunt he would perform, again tongue in cheek, was his strong man act, anyone who seen him will verify that there was 'more meat on a butchers pencil' than on Charlie. The act of tearing the Liverpool phone directory in half was performed with mucho macho and with exaggerated twisting of said directory and face. this act was usually performed for cinema queues. While he performed his mate again would go 'round with 'the cap' , at the same time keeping a look out for the coppers. The last time I seen your grandfathers brother was outside the Odeon cinema London road doing his phone directory act, this time the cops showed up, but Connolly and his mate made a rapid escape down the side street to the laughter of the crowd. I hope this light hearted account does not offend anyone. That you will take it as a coda to a serious subject. I must add that what I have written is a true account.Quote:

As for Emma Gill, it is a waste of time corresponding with her as she has only ever posted once in three and a half years although there has been other newbies who have joined in an attempt to defend the disgaceful and abandoned grave site of "Uncle Georgie".
I am also aware of an email sent by Emma Gill to one of the men who instigated the George Kelly appeal against conviction and it was nothing less than shameful in the way she castigated him for cashing in on the cameo case. Those men involved in the appeal process spent a great deal of their own time and money in proving that "Uncle Georgie" was in fact innocent and neither of them made a single dime out of the issue nor ever intended to.
She should be ashamed of herself!

That was not CHARLES CONNOLLY,
I was a close friend of Charles for many many years until his untimely death in 1997. Charles was a very proud man and would never lower himself to that kind of activity.
I dont think his widow and two sons would appreciate reading comments like that.
Too many people in the past have made up stories and claiming them to be true.
Charles was an innocent man who was caught up by a mad Detective into a crime he knew nothing about.
I hope this clarifies the situation.
I must stress that my account is completely true, I came in contact with people who witnessed the same situations at other times ,who where of the same opinion and knowledge as myself of the identity of the characters in question. I emigrated in 1973 and shortly before then the Odeon event happened. I had a very good knowledge of Liverpool and it's environs because of the occupations I had since leaving school.[ van boy Jacobs biscuits, taxi driver Bootle badge /Radio meter cabs the Rotunda. Kirkdale haulage, mobile crane driver Roadcraft/Woolfendens/and others.] so I wasn't just stuck in some factory for nearly 20 years. The people I came in contact with was a large cross section of Liverpool people. It does sound like you are too close to the subject to be entirely un-bias. At lease I've got a reaction. Maybe the real murderers will come forward and confess. or the two street buskers can be identified for sure. Your opinion has been taken on board.Quote:

There is quite a bit of information about it that has not been published, about the identity of the killer, and so on. it is better now that it is laid to rest as there are now too many theories. Almost everyone involved are now dead and no useful purpose would be gained from it.

To Underworld, captain kong and Ged, thanks for your collective illuminating information. If I have erred and it looks like I may have, I sincerely apologize to any one I have upset. The error was more than likely a case of mistaken identity and just snowballed. I must stress that I was not the initiator of the error. While I'm here I must say I am not surprised that the 'Cameo case' remains of great interest in Liverpool, for as a 11/12 year old I read a newspaper account of the murder [while my Nan wasn't looking] I can't quote it verbatim but the gist of it left a vivid memory and this forum has jodded that memory, hence me typing this reply at the moment. While I'm here I must add that initially I became involved in this forum by replying to Emma Gill [reply # 349] . Again, sorry for any gaffs on my part. Watch out for Everton next season ! coyb
