Love Art Deco.. is it up for Grabs? :handclap:
That may end up in a Museum. At each end of the tunnel there was a tall art deco column. Looked real smart. They were lights. The Birkenhead one survives and the Liverpool one was believed to have been dumped, but found in a Council depot. The green toll booth can be seen to the left of the column.

I love Art Deco too. It covered all aspects of design.

It`s back, looking very smart.
Will this take the place of the jolly green giant with the Liver clock, in future photographs ?

It looks like the old pier masters hut is being converted into a pigeon loft.
Thank you so much for posting these pictures, everybody! Now I know at last what Pier Head looks like now.
Who created those beautiful paintings on the fence? "Just" some "ordinary" people or (an) appointed artist(s)? If the former is the case, that's GREAT and AMAZING! Will these pieces of art preserved somewhere once the fence is gone?

Built in the 1700s, now a big cat.....or... rat.
WOW! That's GREAT!
We never seem to get such beautiful graffiti here, only the usual ugly ones which no outsiders can understand... I wish we had more graffiti artists like that around here...
This was in the 1970/80s

:handclap:
PEOPLE will be able to get their first glimpse of the new-look Pier Head today after the completion of the first phase of an ?8m improvement scheme. Read
Brilliant pics Waterways and GD
:handclap:
Nice that some of It's back but It's shame It wasn't started and finished earlier. The COC caused alot of projects to be started late and started too many at once.
LIVERPOOL?S new look Pier Head opened yesterday after almost two years of works to revitalise the area in front of the city?s famous Three Graces. Read
anyone been down to the Pier Head yet? Any thoughts on the new canal and landscaping?

Went there today could have done with a bit of sun. There seems to be plenty of seating around for us "coffin dodgers" to take in the breezes.
You'll be dodging it a long longer yet Joe. Most people don't walk the distances you do and if you can stand the pier head chill you're tough as old boots ;) Great pics as ever.

It`s good that the various memorial stones have been cleaned up to fit in with the new look of the pierhead
Great pic's G.D.
I didn't realise there were so many memorial plaques around there! Is the British/American forces one still around? It was set in the wall, near where the bus stops were.
This was the location of the USA Fleet memorial from Feb. 2007. The Northern half of the Pier Head is still fenced off.

A picture of the memorial is here:

Glad to see it's still there! Hopefully, there'll be better access to it,when they've finished! I only found it by chance, while waiting for the 14c, in the 80's. It looked great, with a litter bin right in front of it:rolleyes:
Seems like someone forgot to sheet underneath to prevent woodstain wash should it rain.
The canal looks good. I will have to go there next time I am home. Thanks for pics
I sometimes spent the night drinking coffee from the hatch there was always two big burly guys who run it. I would then catch the first bus. You would always meet old characters from around the town and we would jangle on the benches.

You have seen the day time pics here`s the night time.
I left the house at 13OO hrs to go fishing by the "cockle hole",stopped about
1600hrs. Went in the maritime museum for a cup of tea and a scone while waiting for it to go dark then walked along to the pierhead to take some night scenes. Then I walked to Central station to get my train home.
Arrived home at 1930 hrs ,had my tea ,posted some of the pics now I`m off to bed with a couple of glasses of wine to watch the football.
So you can see it`s hard being a pensioner.
Thanks Greg's Dad. You deserve a glass or two of wine today, great pics.

Some more from yesterday evening
My first view of the Pier Head. I have mixed feelings about this, as I have never liked the idea of a canal being dug through the Pier Head, and I still believe there were far better ideas they could have used. But, it's built now, and too early to start a campaign to cover it up, so might as well just put up with it. The finish is really good - far better than I hoped for - so that is good. I think now its empty its fine. I don't like the sight of those horrid barge boats though, so I won't enjoy the view if one of them is stuck there waiting for the locks or whatever it is they do.

It looks dignified now. But what if a narrow boat is stuck there, with their undies drying on the line? I am dreading it. I know some people like narrow boats, but I don't want to see them in the middle of the Pier Head.
I could have done without the King on a Horse returning. It's horrible. I don't mind some of the war memorials there (although there are rather a lot.....I hope they don't keep adding new ones).

"I don't mind some of the war memorials there (although there are rather a lot.....I hope they don't keep adding new ones)." Quote.
Today of all days you might like to reflect why there are so many war memorials there.
Great Photos GD & Liverpolitan, I really have been quite aprehensive having only seen the mess last Summer, but it does appear to have turned out quite well.
I for one like the statues!
