That Empire State building...why? I can't believe that it's because they haven't got enough to fill the space available, but that belongs in Legoland.

Second row of cladding goes on the office block
excellent Howie, cheers :PDT_Aliboronz_24:
Excellent pics, Howie. The museum still looks a bit of an eyesore though
guess who ? but where ?
lol
i nearly didn't see them but i was being nosey and saw them spying on me.
It's the Beatles upstairs in the new ferry terminal which will be an offshoot/overspill of the Beatle Museum at the Albert Dock.
This is a shot of Mann Island taken c1900
Does anyone know what the buildings on the right were, at the back end of the coach, and if Nova Scotia was still occupied?
Dave.
I can see St. Georges church which was demolished around that time and the Queen Vic monument was constructed in 1904 in memorial to her after her death in 1901. The overhead's there obviously but that doesn't look like Voss motors on the right :)
I love the new buildings - all of them. They certainly make the area more interesting and I can't wait for them to open.
No doubt they will all have their critics but look at it this way, we have, in one area, eyecatching buildings from 3 different centuries.
19thC Albert Dock
20thC Three Graces
21stC Museum of Liverpool and Mann Island. All contrasting nicely together.
Glad to see the photographs, Corky and Ged.
Ged, your first one makes me wince. It's almost painful to see this architecture. Aaaaaaaargh! :PDT_Xtremez_12:
The second one makes me feel restful and reassured. Pity such beautiful architecture, beloved of Merseysiders the world over, has to "live" next to these rather ghastly buildings. Ah well!!!!!!!!! :( :( :(
That's my tuppenny thoughts from over here across the Atlantic, still dreaming of home.
Chris
Corky.. Love the 1st picture of the Liver Building with tree.. Very nice indeed..
Ged and Lenka.. nice shots too.. very nice.!!!
I do agree.. I like the old architecture a lot better. :snf (41):
When you look at the classic image of the 3 graces and then look at the mess they've done, they should have all been sacked on the spot for ruining our view.

It should never have got past the drawing board.
I think it'll all turn out good. Some folk I spoke to at the time were really impressed with the new look, and the fact that it seems to be attracting a lot of visitors now.
I think we have to move with the times, and I admit, I do like this new look Skyline, as long as the history remains, It'll all be good.
I rather like the new look. We have to get to used to the idea that we'll never have the likes of the buildings again that were built in the late 1800s and early 1900s. Most of these were private companies making a statements, a pride in their HQ.
There's no going back now and the decisions were taken and we couldn't have done anthing anyway. That area of town will benefit from all the mixed use. Town was buzzing last weekend around there and long may it continue!
This canal link is a mill town development, not fitting in one of the world's largest deep water ports.
Nice to have it, however they butchered the deep water capability to make the place like Manchester or Sheffield.
Okay, but I think they could have done more to make the new buildings either consistent or in keeping with the existing buildings, instead of putting up buildings that are garishly different from what was there already. I suppose if the new museum is a tourist draw, that is to the good. And one good thing to say, at least the new buildings are low, not tall like the projected and defeated "Fourth Grace" Cloud would have been and that would have been a definite abomination (in my view) next to the established Three Graces.
All the best
Chris
We went down to the Pier Head last weekend, it's the first time I have been down there for about 12 months.
I really like the look of the new buildings and canal layout etc. They do seem to blend in although they are more contemporary and so they should be we are in the twenty first century after all.
Sometimes it takes time to get used to change, give it time.
I do agree that some of the Old Dock should have been open, and accessible. However it looks like we ge to see a small portion, and pay for the priveledge. That is a bit of a boo boo.
People seem to forget that there was an ugly old red brick nursing home and car park on the site of the new Liverpool museum.
I don't recall anyone kicking up a fuss about those monstrosities.
And the Liver Building was slated at first and I don't mean the roof. :PDT10
Nursing Home? Below: The cars park is on Manchester Dock & Chester Basin. That is all they were after being filled in in the 1930s.
The buildings between the River lcosk and the car park? Are they the nursing Home?

I remember it being knocked down sometime in the 1980's, can't say for certain.
I posted this pic I took or River View in the early 90's in a thread about 18 months ago. Didn't come up in search so I'll post it again

I must admit I like the new museum, but still in two minds on the black glass stuff going up
This river view rest centre should surely have been saved.
I think some people do forget just how crap it was around there in the 70s and that pic of course is even in the 90s.
I was round the canal area for the first time today and gotta say it looks better than photo's suggest.
Still don't think it's great and I do really dislike the muesum and that other thing but I guess it's an improvement on what was there.
